VALDOSTA — SGMC Health honored Kelly Smith, team coordinator for general surgery, as the March Health System Hero for her extraordinary empathy and commitment to the system’s core values. She was recognized at the health system’s monthly Board of Directors meeting.
Smith’s selflessness was evident when she noticed a man lying in the bed of his pickup truck as she was leaving for the day. Concerned for his well-being, she stopped to check on him. The man explained that he felt too unwell to drive home and needed to rest.
According to the nomination, “Instead of walking away, Kelly immediately took action. She returned to the SGMC Professional Building, retrieved a wheelchair, and single-handedly assisted the man into it before pushing him to the Emergency Room to receive medical care. Kelly’s situational awareness, unwavering compassion, and sense of duty led her to step in and ensure the man received the help he needed.”
Described by her peers as caring and humble, Smith embodies SGMC Health’s mission “to improve the lives of all we serve.” She consistently goes above and beyond, driven by a genuine heart for those in need, the health system said.
SGMC Health President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald E. Dean commended Smith for her display of empathy, accountability, and respect. She received a standing ovation from those in attendance.
