Valwood’s Wells no-hits Panthers

HAHIRA — The Valwood Valiants (4-3) returned to Browning Field on Friday, playing host to the Tiftarea Panthers (3-6).  The end result was all Valiants, a 7-0 no-hitter for starter Asher Wells.

The Valiants had looked to split the season series after a 10-0 loss to the Panthers in Tifton this past Tuesday.

After walking the first batter of the game, Wells got out of the top half of the inning after striking out two of the following three batters.

After drawing a walk during his at-bat, Dustin Gibbs moved to second after a single by Chase Helfer. Dywan Powell helped move both runners after a sacrifice bunt.

The Valiants took an early lead after a single by Triston White drove Gibbs in and moved Helfer to third. A sacrifice flyout by Dax Womack allowed Helfer to score, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Wells struck out the side in the second.

After walking the first batter of the third inning, Wells would brought his strikeout total to seven after striking out the next two batters. An error allowed the Panthers to have two runners on with two outs in the inning. The Valiants kept the 2-0 lead, ending the inning after a flyout by the Panthers.

Helfer would get on base to start the inning after a single. After a strikeout, White would hit a single of his own, advancing Helfer to second.

Womack pushed the Valiants’ lead to 3-0 after a single allowed Helfer to score. After an error by the Panthers allowed Maddox Coile to take first, Valwood hade the bases loaded with one out.

A walk to Colson Smith allowed White to score from third, pushing the lead to 4-0. The Valiants kept the bases full, pushing their lead to 5-0 after a Will Greene walk allowed Womack to score. A single by Wells pushed the Valiants lead to 6-0.

Wells kept rolling in the fourth, striking out two of the three batters to end the inning.

Much like his 4th inning, Wells only faced three batters in the fifth, striking out the last two again and bringing his strikeout total to 11.

After outs by Smith and Greene, the Valiants got a baserunner after a Wells triple. After subbing in as a pinch-runner, Andre Belcher scored the game’s final run after a single by Gibbs pushed the lead to 7-0.

After striking out the first batter of the sixth inning, Wells walked the second Panthers batter he faced. After a flyout for their second out, the Panthers drew another walk, putting runners on first and second with two outs. A pop-out to Brayden Thomas ended the top half of the inning.

Similar to the fourth inning, the Valiants would be unable to add to their score, only sending four batters after Womack was hit by a pitch again.

In the seventh, Wesley Blanchard took over pitching duties for Wells, making quick work of the Panthers by striking out the first two batters. White ended the game after a flyout by the Panthers.

Wells finished the game with 12 strikeouts on 110 pitches through six innings. Wesley Blanchard had two on 15 pitches in closing duty.

Wells also led the team in total bases with four on two hits. Helfer and White also had two hits each. Womack led with two RBIs, with multiple Valiants tallying one each.

The Valwood Valiants (5-3 / 2-2 region) got revenge and split the regular season series with the Panthers with a 7-0 win. The Valiants are back in action on Tuesday, March 25, as they travel to Adel to face the Community Christian Academy Eagles at 5 p.m. The Valiants return to Browning Field the following day, playing host to the Baconton Charter Blazers at 4 p.m.
