The Heritage Oak at Fairview, registered with the Live Oak Society, was destroyed by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The tree was at 206 Wells Street, the Wisenbaker-Wells-Roberts House – Valdosta’s Oldest Home. The Live Oak Society, founded in 1934, promotes the preservation of live oak trees. Lowndes-Valdosta boasts several registered live oaks that survived the onslaught of recent weather, including The Graduation Tree, 1500 North Patterson Street near Valdosta State University’s main entrance, and The Lowndes Viking Oak, located at Lowndes High School.
