LAMP camps out to end homelessness

VALDOSTA — On April 25, sleeping bags, tents, and lights will light up the Valdosta State University Intramural Sports Fields for a cause.
The community is invited to join Camp Out to End Homelessness, an overnight awareness and fundraising event hosted by Lowndes Associated Ministries to People (LAMP). The event stems from LAMP’s mission to challenge stereotypes and shed light on homelessness.
For over 40 years, LAMP has served the region’s homeless population, offering emergency shelter, case management, and rapid rehousing programs to individuals and families. Now, they’re inviting the public to experience a night under the stars to better understand the realities of homelessness — and to be part of the solution.
Participants will hear firsthand accounts from LAMP clients who have overcome life on the streets and enjoy community meals. The night will also feature interactive games for participants to take part in, such as a cardboard box shelter-building contest.
“We want to bring awareness to how homelessness is not always because someone is lazy, but is a multi-standard issue,” said Michael Conger, MPA, Development & Marketing representative for LAMP.
This year marks a significant milestone for LAMP, celebrating 40 years of impact and transformation. According to Conger, the organization is evolving and inviting the community to witness that growth.
“There are a lot of changes, and we welcome the community to take tours and see how LAMP has changed over the last couple of years,” he said.
As an extra incentive, the team that raises the most funds will win a 3-day, 2-night cruise for two — making their support for the homeless community not only meaningful but potentially rewarding.
