VALDOSTA — An investigation is underway into the death of an inmate being held at Valdosta State Prison Wednesday.
Georgia Department of Corrections Manager of Communications Lori Benoit confirmed the April 2 death of Brandon McGee, a Dekalb County man who was serving a 20-year sentence for armed robbery at the Valdosta prison.
Benoit said McGee’s body was turned over to the Lowndes County Coroner’s Office and will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab to determine the official cause of death.
“The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards, as standard procedure,” she said, “however, additional details are not available, as the investigation is ongoing.”
County Coroner Austin Fiveash was out in the field and not available for comment Friday morning.
McGee was sentenced to 20 years, Benoit said, with a maximum release date of June 2025.
No additional information on McGee’s death was available at press time.
