VALDOSTA — A new mural now welcomes travelers at the Valdosta Regional Airport, the result of the creativity and dedication of Valdosta State University art students. The mural will be officially unveiled during a public ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the airport’s baggage claim area.
This endeavor was a collaborative project involving VSU’s Department of Art & Design, the Valdosta Regional Airport, and the Public Arts Advisory Council (PAAC). Students enrolled in the university’s Special Topics Mural Class, under the guidance of Professors Craig Hawkins and Evelyn Davis-Walker, spent the spring semester mastering all facets of mural creation — from client presentations and budgeting to wall preparation and painting techniques.
Completed within a week, the mural not only serves as a colorful landmark but also as a creative introduction to the Valdosta community. It features interactive elements, including QR code decals throughout the design that direct visitors to local attractions and encourage them to explore the area.
This mural project exemplifies the intersection of education, public art, and community engagement. It enhances the terminal’s aesthetic and connects people to the essence of Valdosta.
The public is invited to join the ribbon-cutting celebration and experience the mural firsthand.
