VALDOSTA — Sammy Edwards is getting his chance at the NFL.

Soon after the National Football League Draft ended Sunday, the Valdosta State quarterback received an invitation to the New York Giants’ minicamp.

Edwards, who led the Blazers to the Division II national title game in 2024, and was third in Harlon Hill Trophy voting, will have a challenge ahead of him to make the roster.

The Giants not only have seasoned and established pros Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston on the current roster, but Tommy DeVito, who has also started games. Plus, New York drafted Jaxson Dart out of Mississippi in the first round of this year’s Draft.

But Edwards made his career at VSU out of rising to challenges.

Valdosta State stats have Edwards fourth all-time there in passing yardage at 7,635 and sixth in touchdowns at 66.

Edwards was only picked off twice in 2024 in 357 attempts. No slouch on the ground, was fourth on the Blazers in rushing yards a year ago, third sans sack yards.

Even if Edwards does not stick with the Giants, the minicamp invitation opens him up to other teams looking for a QB.

Three former VSU players — Kenny Moore (Colts), Jody Fortson (Chiefs) and Thomas Incoom (Panthers) — were active on NFL rosters last season. A fourth, Christian Matthew, was on injured reserve with the Ravens.
