Friends of the Library Big Book Sale a huge success

Published 8:00 pm Thursday, May 1, 2025

The “Friends of the Library” sponsored a big book sale at McMullen Southside Library, 527 Griffin Ave., April 26-27.

On Saturday, the sale started with more than 70 boxes of assorted books and DVDs, and by Sunday afternoon, the sale ended with about two boxes left.

On Saturday morning at the start of the sale (11 a.m.), patrons of all ages were lined up across the parking lot, some had arrived as early as 9 a.m. Folks waited in the sun for up to three hours to enter the Beverly Sanders Community Room to search and fill a bag with books for $5. A patron said she drove from South Carolina with family to shop.

Prior to Hurricane Helena, Friends of the Library opened a book store inside the Willis L. Miller Library, located at 2906 Julia Dr., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday and Saturday. With the closing of the library, Friends of the Library has not been able to open for business, and will not open until repairs are completed at Miller Library in about 18 months.

Books are donated by community readers when done. Proceeds from book sales support South Georgia Regional Libraries in Lake Park, Statenville, Hahira, Lakeland and McMullen Southside Library.

Friends of the Library members were surprised by the response, but so proud of the community for its support.
