Ruby Elsberry Douberley
Ruby Elsberry Douberley, 90, of Morven died Thursday, Nov. 28, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Douberley was born in Rockmart, Ga., to William Starling and Fannie Hulsey Elsberry. She had been a resident of Brooks County since 1928, moving here from Ruskin, Fla. She was a homemaker and member of Morven United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons: Glen (Wanda) Douberley, Roy Douberley, all of Morven; two granddaughters, Stacie Harrell, Leslie (Jeremy) Mearrs; four great-grandchildren, William, Josh, Megan and Hanna; nieces and nephews; and one sister, Gertie Golding of Quitman. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. in the Maxwell-Miller Chapel with Rev. Wayne Hughes, Rev. Jeri Pruitt and Rev. Debbie Cone officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday night from 6-8 p.m. Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. James Thomas Garvin
Mr. James Thomas Garvin, age 85, of Valdosta, Ga., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002. He was born in Grays, S.C., Feb. 14, 1917. Mr. Garvin was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Garvin, and two sons, James Thomas Garvin Jr. and Kerry Bradford Garvin. Mr. Garvin retired from Firestone in 1972 and then started Garvin-Wetherington Firestone, from which he recently retired.
He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was a member of Valdosta Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. Graveside services were Nov. 26 at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga., with Bishop Harry Shipps officiating. He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Garvin Bossert of Decatur, Ga., Patsy Dunlap of Simpsonville, S.C., Cindy Taylor of Valdosta; a son, Tracy Garvin of Atlanta, two sisters, Ruby Reed and Alma Woo of Savannah; four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Christ Episcopal Church in Valdosta, Ga.
Mrs. Bobbie J. Hancock
Mrs. Bobbie J. Hancock, 64, 505 Griner St., Nashville, Ga., died Nov. 28, 2002, at Tift Regional Hospital. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mickey Lindsey officiating. Interment is at the Woodlawn Cemetery Annex. Mrs. Hancock was born May 10, 1938, in Rebecca, Ga., and lived in Cook County most of her life, recently moving to Nashville. She was a member of Adel Church of God and was retired from Tift Regional Hospital. Her parents are the late Kenneth Lipsey and Neurean Evans Lipsey. Mrs. Hancock was also preceded in death by one brother, Ed Lipsey, and a sister, Velma Layfield. Survivors are three sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Taresa Hancock, Adel, Ga., Allen Hancock, Jacksonville, Fla., and Daniel and Lisa Hancock, Nashville, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Hancock-Boyd and Bill, Nashville; a brother, Billy Evans, Ashburn, Ga.; sisters, Linda Johnson, Sumner, Ga., Patricia Childress, Sylvester, Ga., Carol Dean, Nashville; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Inc.
Dewey C. “D.C.” May
Dewey C. “D.C.” May, 78, Nashville, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Berrien County Hospital. Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Berrien County, he was the son of Dewey Elbert May and Ethel Stone. In 1963, he became disabled due to injuries received in an auto accident. At the time of the accident, he was employed with Lovein Funeral Home as a funeral and ambulance attendant. D.C. and Kathleen were married for 59 years. He is survived by Kathleen Bailey May of Nashville; and four sons, Dewey May, Butler, James May, Nashville, Billy Jack May, Nashville, and Wayne May, Nashville; and nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Ralph May. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Pickern and the Rev. R.T. Castleberry officiating. Interment is at Westview Cemetery. Visitation is at 3 p.m. Saturday with the family receiving friends f

Ruth Holland Pickup
Ruth Holland Pickup, 70, of Valdosta died on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Born in Urmston, England, on June 18, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Ella Barber Holland. Mrs. Pickup had made her home in Valdosta since 1955. She was a bank teller with First National Bank and a self-employed bookkeeper. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Union Jack Club. Survivors are her husband, Derek Pickup of Valdosta; son, Derek Pickup Jr. of Quitman; daughter, Stacey Pullen of Dublin; grandchildren, William Holloway of Union City and Nicole Pullen of Dublin; and a sister, Eileen Gureux of Quebec, Canada. Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Peter Ingeman officiating. Carson McLane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
John Anthony Sapp
John Anthony Sapp, 70, of Morven died Thursday, Nov. 28, at Madison Nursing Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Brooks County, Ga., he was the son of John B. Gordon and Sarah Ann Marshall Sapp. He was a farmer and member of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his mother, Sarah Sapp of Morven; one brother, Ernest Sapp of Valdosta; nine nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and George Sapp. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. in the Maxwell-Miller Chapel. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 4-6 p.m. Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Helen Marie McLean Smith Tucker
HOMERVILLE, Ga. — Mrs. Helen Marie McLean Smith Tucker, 86, passed away Tuesday morning in the Clinch Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Clinch County, she was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church, Women’s Missionary Society, Women’s Club and the Eastern Star. She was the daughter of the late William Wright McLean and Janie Annabel Cook McLean. She was the widow of Gordan Arthur Smith Sr. and Russall Howard Tucker. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Gordan Arthur Smith Jr. and Julie Smith, Savannah; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Henry Selph, Homerville; six grandchildren, Lajuanta Mattox, Homerville, Jimmy Edenfield, Mobile, Ala., Danny Edenfield, Homerville, John Leland Edenfield, St. George, Ivan Smith and Coleman Smith, both of Atlanta; 11 great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jessica, Jennifer, Danna, Kayla, Cora, Joni, Paige and John Edenfield and Daniel and Lucas Cason; two great-great-grandchildren, Breanna Cason and LeLe Cason; and several other relatives. Funeral services for Mrs. Tucker will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Homerville First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery. Mrs. Tucker will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7-9 p.m. with visitation after 4 p.m. Mrs. Tucker will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services. Funeral services for Mr. Freddie Lee Davis, age 68, of Quitman will be held today, Nov. 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany Baptist Church in Quitman with Dr. R.L. Spencer, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the North End Cemetery in Quitman. Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home of Quitman is in charge of the arrangements.
