ADEL — An Adel City Councilman being held at the Cook County Jail on charges of pointing a firearm at a family member was released on a $20,000 property bond Wednesday.
Gregory L. Paige Sr., 217 W. Ninth St., was arrested Thanksgiving day by an Adel Police Department officer.
He is also charged with battery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime.
Mayor Richard C. Barr said the city is waiting to see what the circumstances are and will talk with the city attorney before they move forward with any action.
“Just because a man is charged with something doesn’t mean he is guilty,” Barr said.
If not found guilty, Barr said, Paige will remain in office.
However, in the worst-case scenario, Barr said Paige would likely forfeit his right to hold public office and his right to be a police officer.
Paige was once a deputy with the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office.
Adel Police Chief Chad Castleberry said he wasn’t sure of the details surrounding the case.
Patrol Officer Jessica Shaffer, with the Adel Police Department, responded to the residence on Ninth Street in reference to a man waving a gun, the report states.
“Upon arrival, I secured the area and documented several witnesses’ statements,” according to Shaffer’s family violence incident report. “Based on the physical and testimonial evidence, I placed Greg Paige under arrest, and he was transported to the County Jail. A list of complete charges are pending my further investigation.”
Shaffer was not available for comment.
