Diane Johnson (Dinah) King Ashley
VALDOSTA — Mother Diane Johnson (Dinah) King Ashley of Valdosta, the daughter of Will and Mary Hane Johnson, was born in Adel on May 6, 1917.
She received her education in the county school system. As a young adult, she met and was joined in holy matrimony to the late Nathan R. King. To this union, four loving sons and one daughter was born. She joined the church at an early age as a member of Evergreen Christian Church. Later she joined the church at Brays Temple Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. B.T. Washington. She felt led to move to the Holiness faith under present pastor’s leadership with Elder Wesley Bee and the Christ Church of Universal Love family 36 years ago, where she has remained and served faithfully until her health failed.
Her memory will forever remain with her sons, Franklin King (Bernice) of Brooklyn N.Y., Rev. Willie King (Bertha) of Clearwater, Fla., James King (Shelley) of Valdosta,; daughter, Clotele K. Berrian (Terry) of Valdosta; brother, Richard Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Doretha Beal of Valdosta; 18 grandchildren, Derrian, Sheila, Mathan King, all of Valdosta, Sherrie Williams of Temple, Texas, Laylah King of Orlando, Fla., Morman King of Giessen, Germany, Deshoundria King of Wichita Falls, Texas, Steven King, Oliver King, both of Clearwater, Fla., Kwame Hitson, Devincent M. Douglas, Runako Berrian and Kamiluh Berrian, Terry Conaueby, all of Valdosta, Juanell King of Gainesville, Cedric Williams of Valdosta, Margvita Whiting and Asha King of Clearwater, Fla., 44 great-grandchildren; two Godchildren, Telina Jones of Clearwater, Fla., and Margaret Williams (Robert); and caring friends, Ernestine Brantley, Annie Sanford, Linda Huggie and Ovida Larry, all of Valdosta; a devoted niece, Betty Jackson (Rosevelt), of Valdosta, the staff of South Unit of Heritage House Nursing Home, Carolyn Ryan’s PersonalCare Home family; also a host of nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Grace Victory Church, Min. Robert Daniels is Pastor and Elder Wesley Bee will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Harrington Funeral Home
Iviry L. Davis
VALDOSTA — Mr. Iviry L. Davis, 60, of Valdosta, was born the fourth child on Sept. 26, 1942, in Valdosta to the late Isiah Sr. and the late Estelle Albritton Davis.
He was born in a Christian home and later joined the Antioch Baptist Church at an early age. He was educated in the public school system of Valdosta. He later met and married Cherry Scruggs and was the father of seven children. He resided all his life in Valdosta working various jobs until he joined the United States Army Reserve. He served in the military for 12 years in second tour of duty under the 1st Infantry Division. He also served in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart two bronze stars. He was also in the 173rd light airborne division. He was a member of the American Legion Post 503 and the Amvet Post 607. Mr. Iviry Davis resided at 745 E. Ann Street, Valdosta, Georgia. He departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Cherry Davis; five sons, Shannon Green and Deonta Richardson , both of Jacksonville, Fla., Gary Scruggs, Micheal Davis (Jennie) of Thomasville, Ga. and Dexter Swinton (Suzett) of Valdosta; two daughters, Latonya Davis of Valdosta and Erica Jones (Chris) of Thomasville; five brothers, Isiah Davis (Jean Catherine) of New Brunswick, N.J., Isaac Davis (Laura) of Texas, Ivie Lee Davis (Helen) of Washington D.C., Irvin Davis (Jimmie) and Innis Davis (Geraldine) both of Valdosta; four sisters, Mary Glostic (Benny) of Gainesville, Fla., Gilda Hardin (Kenneth) of Mobile, Ala., Gloria Stewart and Gretta Johnson, both of Valdosta, a Goddaughter and very loving devoted niece, Angela Pittman of Valdosta; one uncle, Author Davis of Atlanta; two aunts, Mary Davis of Atlanta and Cora Davis of Valdosta; 11 grandchildren; 27 nieces and nephews and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at First Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 517 North Oak Street, the Rev. Albert Barfield is the pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Scott and Roberts Mortuary
William Mortimer Peeples
VALDOSTA — William Mortimer Peeples, 82, of Valdosta passed away Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 25, 1921, in Chatsworth to the late Isaac Mortimer and Leona Peeples. Mr. Peeples graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942 and was the senior class president. He moved to Valdosta in 1957 and became a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church. He was a part of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He retired as a Ford Tractor Dealer after 47 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. His unit received the WWII Certificate of Merit. He was preceded by his loving wife, Evelyn, of 53 years, and by his brothers, Frank Peeples, Robert Peeples and Paul Peeples.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Carter Peeples of Valdosta; two daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Roy Tritt of Augusta, and Marcia Tillman of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Deborah Tritt of Augusta, Jennifer Tritt of Atlanta, Joseph Tillman, Jr. of Newnan and Eric Tillman of Valdosta; one stepson, Carl Ivey Carter of Lake Park; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Joanne and Dub Bagwell of Gainesville and Jeannie and Dr. Pat Pennington of Valdosta; step grandchildren Ivey Carter and Ginny Carter of Lake City, Fla., William and Jennifer Bagwell, Carla and John Bridges, Emily and Charles Bailey, all of Gainesville, and Patton Pennington and Kate Pennington of Valdosta; several step great grandchildren; seven brothers and their wives, Morris and Eugenia Peeples of Madison, Tenn., Bernard and Margaret Peeples, Harlan and Linda Peeples, John and Frances Peeples, of Chatsworth, Ga., Jim and Ann Peeples of Hickory, N.C., Bud and Linda Peeples of Rocky Face, Ga., Julian and Jane Peeples of Dalton; three sisters, Carolyn and Miles Anderson and Mary Nell Calfee of Chatsworth and Martha Ann and Reverend Jesse Hart of Montgomery, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Park Avenue United Methodist Church with the Reverend Craig Rikard, the Rev. V. L. Daughtery and the Rev. Bob Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Roscoe R. Swilley
ECHOLS COUNTY — Roscoe R. Swilley, 91, of Echols County, died on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lowndes County on Aug. 3, 1912, to the late William P. and Zellie Corbett Swilley, was a resident of Echols County since 1940, was a retired farmer and a member of the Bethel Church of God.
Mr. Swilley was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Muriel R. Swilley on Sept. 21, 2000. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Claude Hughes of Valdosta, Wanda and Thomas Mathis, Diann and Don Reid, Vicky and Leroy Carter; two sons, James Swilley and Morris Swilley, all of Echols County; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Cenova Wilkes of Plant City, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at the Bethel Church of God with the Rev. Joe Tatum officiating. Burial will follow at Wrights Chapel Cemetery. ‘Bud’ Thakoor
VALDOSTA — Bhupendra “Bud” Thakoor, 46, of Valdosta passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003. Bhupendra was the son of Maganlal and Vajiyaben Thakoor of Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a printer, self-employed Realtor and resident of Valdosta for over 10 years. He enjoyed watching cricket and soccer, playing guitar and spending time with friends and family.
Bhupendra is lovingly remembered by his wife and daughter, Neelum and Sheetal Thakoor of Valdosta; Jayanti and Jayshri Thakoor and Suresh and Vina Ramdas, all of South Africa; Amratlal Thakoor of Dublin; Dinesh and Saroj Thakoor of Valdosta; Arvind and Aruna Thakoor of Camilla; Ajit and Indira Mehta of Eastman; and nephews and nieces Rekha, Meera and Sanjiv Parikh, Meera and Roshan Patel, Suresh, Joshila, Priya, Kamlesh, Kavita, Preetesh, Amar, Sonal, Sanam; and granddaughter, Neena.

Wood Wetherington
VALDOSTA — Sarah Texas Wood Wetherington, 94, of Valdosta died Thursday, Oct.. 1, 2003 at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born on April 23, 1909, in Lowndes County to the late Joseph and Sarah Catherine Spradley Penny. Mrs. Wetherington was a member of the Benevolence Baptist Church and had been employed in the Clyattville school lunchroom and as a sales lady at Varnedoe’s.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma Wood Connell Scaduto and Pete Scaduto of Summerfield, Fla.; two daughters-in-law, Barbara Wood Junger and Bud Junger of Valdosta and Patricia Wetherington of Fargo; seven grandchildren, Gail (Ron) Hunt of Jacksonville, Fla., Wanda (Gary) Wetherington of Hilton Head, S.C., Larry (Judy) Connell of Varnville, S.C., Gwen (Jimmy) Skrine of Portal., Melissa Wood (Otis) Tindall of Valdosta, Marc (Angie) Wood of Dasher and Micah Wood of Wyoming; 16-great grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Columbus L. Wood and J. L. Wetherington, two sons, Joe Wayne Wood and Jack E. Wood and a grandson, Kenneth Joel Connell.
A visitation will be held today Oct. 3, 2003 from 10-11a.m. at Benevolence Baptist Church with graveside services to follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Boykin and the Rev. David Paulk officiating. The family has requested that no food be provided and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Benevolence Baptist Church. — Carson McLane Funeral Home.

Mr. Cornelius A. Stephens, 67, of Quitman, died on Wednesday Oct. 1, 2003, at the Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced later by Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home of Quitman.
