Harris named GSC East Player of the Week

Valdosta State senior guard Kevin Harris has been named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, according to an announcement made by the league office on Wednesday.

Harris earned the award after leading VSU to a pair of victories over the weekend. The Douglas native opened the weekend by scoring a career-best 29 points, on 10-of-18 shootings, in a 90-67 victory over Lynn Friday evening.
He connected on 7-of-10 three-pointers in the game and also pulled down five rebounds while dishing out two assists and recording two steals in 32 minutes of action.
Harris was even more impressive the following night as he scored 34 points while leading the Blazers to a 113-103 double overtime victory over Nova Southeastern on Saturday.
He scored 31 of his 34 points in the final 11 minutes of regulation and in the two overtime periods, during which time he connected on 9-of-12 field goal attempts, including 5-of-8 threes, and all eight of his free throws.
For the game, Harris hit 10-of-17 shots and pulled down five rebounds while dishing out a game-high six assists and tallying a steal in 36 minutes of play.
On the week, Harris averaged 31.5 points, five rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 57.1 percent from the field, including 59.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc, as well as 83.3 percent from the free throw line.

Harris is the second Blazer this season to earn the weekly GSC honor as Tristan Steele also claimed the honor on Nov. 17 after leading VSU to three victories the first week of the season.
The Blazers travel to Delta State on Tuesday for their first road game of the season. They won’t return home until Jan. 6, 2011.
