Suwannee’s game against Tampa Jesuit was moved ahead one hour specifically so the local Nole fans could rush home to catch the last half of the FSU/Miami game. When the fans got home, the Noles were up 10-0. Joy! But the Canes mounted a hurricane of a comeback in the second half to win their sixth straight game over the Seminoles 16-10.
Suwannee has a player on the Florida State defense, Kyler Hall and a player on the Hurricane defense, Kelly Jennings. Both young men have been friends and teammates at Suwannee High. Each year of their college football careers, they have faced off in the FSU/Miami contest. This year the outcome was no different. Miami won and it was their defense that did the job.
The Hurricanes, playing their first game as a member of the ACC won this game with their defense. Miami’s Thomas Carroll recovered a Chris Rix fumble in overtime. The Canes scored on their next play when Frank Gore ran for 18 yards to put the Hurricanes on top 16-10.
Miami scored 16 straight points after Florida State took a 10-0 lead, by capitalizing on two turnovers. With less than four minutes to play, Miami blocked a 34-yard field goal that would have nailed the victory for Florida State. But as the story goes, the ball went back to Miami instead.
Brock Berlin led the Canes 80 yards in five plays finishing the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Sinorice Moss to tie the game at 10. The game went into overtime into history.
Berlin finished 20 of 36 for 255 yards and an interception. Gore ran 18 times for 89 yards.
Rix threw two interceptions, fumbled twice including the one in overtime. He finished 12 of 28 for 108 yards. The Seminoles rushed for 57 yards.
