Atlanta police say a 5-year-old boy received severe lacerations to his face and head when he was attacked by a pit bull.

Officer K.Y. Jones says the attack happened in southwest Atlanta Monday night.

Police say the child, whose name was not released, was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. His condition was not available.

Family members told WSB-TV the boy was attacked by the dog as he got out of a car. Police say animal control officers were able to capture the dog.
