VALDOSTA — SGMC Health recently presented Katie Richards with the November 2024 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing. This award recognizes the outstanding care, compassion, and commitment nurses bring to their patients and families, embodying the core values of SGMC Health, the health care system said.
Richards’ nomination, submitted by Kevin Broome, RN nurse manager, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, highlighted her dedication during a recent LifeLink organ donation case, SGMC Health said in a statement. Throughout the week, Richards provided exceptional care, establishing a strong bond with the patient’s family. When it was decided that the organ procurement would take place on a Saturday, she volunteered to come in on her day off to support the family during this challenging time. She explained that she wanted to be there for them, not wanting the family to face such a profound moment alone.
Upon arriving, Richards was met with a grateful smile from the patient’s wife, who expressed how much her presence meant to the family, putting them at ease in the midst of a difficult experience. She was granted the honor of escorting the patient to the operating room and stayed alongside the family throughout the organ procurement process, offering comfort, empathy, and unwavering support.
“Katie’s selflessness and compassion are a testament to the incredible spirit of our nursing team,” said Broome. “Her dedication to the family and patient went far beyond the duties of her role, and her actions serve as an inspiring example of what it means to truly care for others. She represents the mission of SGMC Health: ‘To improve the lives of all we serve’ and embodies our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Respect.”
DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies was donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health’s DAISY Award.
