Plenty of places for kids to have a good time

School’s out for summer. What can kids do with all of that free time during these summer weeks? Luckily, several area organizations have planned a summer filled with camps, fun classes, activities, field trips, etc. Here are some of the summer events planned for area youths.

AMANDA’S MODELS

& TALENT

Local modeling agency offers its seventh annual Broadway Camp, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., June 6-10.  Ages: 3-18 years old. Participants will separate into groups. They will learn scenes from “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Wiz.” The week ends with a special performance, 7 p.m., June 10. More information: Visit amandasmodels.com; or call (229) 245-1224. TURNER CENTER

FOR THE ARTS

The arts center, 527 N. Patterson St., has numerous classes planned for the summer months, for various ages. More information: Call 247-2787; or visit www.turnercenter.org. Classes are scheduled for the weeks of June 13-17; June 20-24; July 11-15; mid-July. Classes include cooking, etiquette, ceramics & pottery, jewelry making, ceramics, botanical mural painting. Costs vary.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

With locations at Lake Laurie Drive and the corner of Toombs Street and North Street, the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta’s Summer Program 2011 offers youngsters recreational activities as well as programs in the arts, character and leadership, education and career development, physical education, social recreation.Swimming, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, field trips, etc., are also offered during the summer program. Times and dates: Both facilities are open from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., starting Tuesday, May 31, then Mondays through Fridays, through July 29. JAMES MINISTRIES

James Ministries presents a Youth Advance Camp running June 27 through July 1, 4-H Campground, Lake Park. The camp will offer many activities: watersports, volleyball, team competitions, daily devotions, food, etc. Calling itself “a camp with a purpose,” James Ministries offers youth a chance to have summer fun while building a stronger relationship with God. LITTLE ACTORS THEATRE

This local organization has headquarters located at 601-B N. Patterson St. LAT’s motto is plays by children for children, with adult supervision. LAT has activities throughout the year but for the summer, too. More information: Contact Diane Tovar, 244-8282; or visit www.littleactorsvaldosta.com. LAT again hosts Missoula Children’s Theatre, July 11-16, with shows at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., July 16. These shows will be “The Little Mermaid.” Ages: Groups, 6-7 years old; 8-12 years old; 13-up. The Missoula sessions will be at Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center, 3101 N. Forrest St. Cost: $100.

SOUTH GEORGIA REGIONAL LIBRARY

With six branches stretching from Lowndes County to Lanier and Echols counties, South Georgia Regional Library system has numerous programs planned throughout the summer. Reading programs, story-telling shows, contests, activities, movies, throughout the summer, with things kids can do at home and at the library locations.

VALDOSTA-LOWNDES COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION AUTHORITY

The Authority offers a variety of camps and activities, with swimming, crafts, theme weeks, etc., for an assortment of ages at various locations. More information: Visit www.vlpra.com; or call Sirocus Barnes, 333-1861.

— Kamp Kaleidoscope: These camps are offered at Forrest Street Gym, 1901 N. Forrest St., Valdosta; Craig Center, 1104 W. Gordon St., Valdosta; Mildred Hunter Community Center, 509 S. Fry St., Valdosta; South Lowndes Recreation Center, 6440 Ocean Pond Road, Lake Park, Activities include daily arts & crafts, P.E., music, swimming, guest speakers, field trips, etc. For younger children. Camp hours, dates: 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, Camp started last week and continues through Aug. 4. Cost: $70 per week; scholarships available. Theme weeks revolve around cable-television channels: The Learning Channel (TLC), National Geographic, ESPN, Travel Channel, CNN, History Channel, Nickelodeon, Food Network, Boomerang, Animal Planet, VH1.

— Extreme Teens, Jaycee Shack, 2306 Jaycee Shack Road. Leadership courses, field trips, rope courses, fishing, cooking, Jacksonville Beach, more. Camp hours, dates: 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, started last week and continues through Aug. 4. Ages: 12-15. Cost: $70 per week.

VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY

VSU Continuing Education, 903 N. Patterson St., hosts its annual series of Camp Discovery kids camps with numerous courses planned for various ages and interests. More information on camps: Call 245-6484; or visit www.valdosta.edu/conted then click on “Kids Stuff.” Prices vary per course.

An afternoon rec room has been added this year, offering half days through July 29 at the VSU Continuing Education Building on North Patterson Street. Classes are also offered at this location. Classes include Let’s Act Out, Going Buggy, Horsemanship 101, Tennis Anyone? Teen Rockstars! Cooking Around the World, Lego Junior, Kids and Castles, Animals in the Outback, Tennis Fun, Hip-Hop Funk, Lego Creator, Lego Technical, Dance Imagination, Awesome Artists in the Jungle, Mad Scientists, Critter Camp, Decorate Your Door, Arts & Crafts Galore, Welcome to Broadway! VALWOOD

Valwood School Summer Camp 2011 offers a wide variety of camps, classes and activities this summer at its Old U.S. 41 North location. Ages vary for each course and each camp runs about a week. Classes include Art Party sessions, JV Boys Basketball Camp, JV Girls Basketball Camp, “Kooking Kamp for Kids,” Little Valiant Cheerleading Camp, PE Fun & Games, Stories Art & More, Valwood Fit Club sessions, X Marks the Spot: Geocaching Camp, Titletown Tennis Camp, Drama Camp. WIREGRASS GEORGIA TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Wiregrass presents Glo-Dayz, a week-long camp centered on state-of-the-art graphics, digital printing, etc., field trips. Ages: Rising ninth through 12th graders. Run dates: 8:30 a.m. -5 p.m., June 13-16. Wiregrass Valdosta campus. Cost: $99, includes lunch. Space limited to 15. YMCA

YMCA, 2424 Gornto Road, offers a Summer Day Camp featuring numerous activities, such as swimming, field trips, art, computers, etc., for youngsters. Camp dates: 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, started last week, and runs until the start of school. Cost: $75 per week, YMCA member, $70, additional children; $80 per week, non-member, $75, additional child; registration fee, $10 per child. More information: Call 244-4646.
