Good weekend for VSU tennis teams

Valdosta State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams made a strong showing this weekend, going 5-1.

The VSU men’s team remained undefeated with three dominant wins over Lambuth, Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama. The Blazers did not lose a single match in their three victories.  The VSU women’s team picked up two wins, defeating Lambuth 5-0 and Alabama-Huntsville 8-1.  Both teams started the weekend with dominant 5-0 wins over Lambuth.

For the Lady Blazers, Nicole Hernandez teamed with Jessica Tuggle to win 8-0 over Courtney and Ashley Cothren. Alina Nagel and Sarah Braun beat Dasha Klyuyenko and Morgan Moore 8-0. In the only singles match to be completed, Hernandez beat Courtney Cothren, 6-0, 6-0.  For the Blazers, Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen beat Ryan Swift and Justin King 8-0. Bernhard Wallner and Otto Lenhart beat Keithroy Proctor and Rafael Vanceslau. Konstantin Kutschenko won the only other completed match, a 6-0, 6-0 win over Proctor.

Valdosta State continued its dominance against Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. The Lady Blazers won 8-1. Braun won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Giannina Mulky. Nagel prevailed at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 over Amanda Sippel. Braun and Nagel also teamed up for a win in doubles over Mulky and Sippel, 8-1.  Hernandez and Tuggle won their No. 2 doubles match 8-4 over Maria Lawton and Kasi McDonald. In singles, Hernandez beat Lawton, 6-4, 6-0, while Tuggle beat Lina Carvajal, 6-3, 6-3.

Jahyna Pope won her match at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 7-6 over Amanda Bevis. Leslie Roberge and Pope also beat Carvajal and Bevis in doubles, 8-3.

Valdosta State’s men won 9-0. In doubles, Dueren and Hansen, the No. 2 doubles team in Division II, won 9-8 (7-1) over Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano. Philip Pakebusch and Luis Loeffler, the No. 3 team in the country, made short work of Raphael Oliviera and Guilermo Reyes, winning 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Wallner and Lenhart beat Bruno Medeiros and Jordan Belcher 8-2.

In singles, Dueren put away Canellas 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot, while Hansen, playing No. 2 singles, beat Kano 6-2, 6-1. Loeffler beat Oliviera 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Kutschenko beat Reyes 6-1, 7-5. At No. 5 singles, Wallner outlasted Medeiros 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Lenhart helped VSU finish strong with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

Then VSU headed to North Alabama, where the Blazers earned another 9-0 sweep.  In doubles, Dueren and Hansen won 8-1, while Pakebusch and Loeffler prevailed 8-6. Wallner and Lenhart beat T.J. Drake and Corey Griffin, 9-7.

In singles, Wallner and Lenhart both put away their opponents 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Kutschenko beat Rob Whitsitt 6-0, 6-2. Pakebusch won 6-1, 6-4, Hansen earned a 6-4, 6-4 win and Loeffler won 6-4, 6-3 to complete the 9-0 sweep.  However, VSU’s women fell 7-2. The Lady Blazers earned the first point of the day when Braun and Nagel outlasted Victoria Rees and Bruna Vieira 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. The other point for the VSU women came at No. 2 singles, where Nagel beat Vieira in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Valdosta State faces Cameron on Friday. On Saturday, VSU’s men will face Ouachita Baptist, while the women will take on Central Oklahoma. All of those matches will take place in Pensacola, Fla.
