Blazer volleyball sweeps Albany State

Valdosta State rebounded from a tough weekend with a dominating performance against Albany State. The Blazers swept the Golden Rams, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-18) Tuesday night. With the win, VSU improves to 10-7 on the season while dropping the Golden Rams to 9-7.
Valdosta State used a balanced performance to put away Albany State. Four players had seven or more kills, led by Katie Onushko with 11. Tania Tauiliili had nine followed by Chelsea Logan and Jennifer Beatty with eight and seven kills respectively.
The Blazers were efficient too. Tauiliili led the team with a .389 attacking percentage. Onushko finished at .286 while Beatty hit .250. Destiny Berry finished attacking an eye-popping .625 with five kills on eight attacks with no errors.
Valdosta State finished the match hitting .299 for the team percentage and was at .364 for the first set compared to Albany State’s -.278. Helping the percentage was setter Ashley Lala with two kills on three attacks for a .667. She also ran the offense, dishing 35 assists.
Defensively, the Blazers tallied five blocks and Onushko was in on four of them. Albany State, however, finished with 10 blocks led by ASU’s Jillian Anderson. She had three solos and three assists.
Chelsea Luttfring led Valdosta State with nine digs. Lala chipped in seven while Beatty added six digs.
The Blazer defense held the Golden Rams to a mere .105 attacking percentage. Anderson led ASU in kills with eight while libero Jennifer Johnson led in digs with 13. Albany State’s duo of setters combined for 19 assists, 11 from Desiree Hardy and eight from Kenya Jolicoeur.
