Suwannee Dry held their first meeting Thursday evening at Bible Baptist Church in Live Oak. Although more than a dozen of the committee’s signs have been destroyed, the movement said it will stick to the rules as the battle over making Suwannee County wet continues.

The group said the opposition consists of their friends, neighbors and family.

“Those on the other side are not our enemies,” said Brad Bailey chairman of Suwannee Dry, and pastor of Bible Baptist Church, an opponent of Suwannee County going wet. “This will be conducted in three ways: with accountability, with accountability, with accountability.”

Bailey has stated on local radio shows that he fears alcohol sales will result in increased DUI’s. He also disagrees with the campaign of Suwannee Yes!, a local organization that supports making Suwannee a wet county, that alcohol sales will excite an economic boost for the county.

Bailey led the meeting held at 7 p.m., which focused on forming committees and rallying support.

“I believe God is in favor of what we are doing here,” he said to a group of about 50.

Bailey then quoted Abraham Lincoln: “The only thing that has to happen for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.”

The group formed four committees: advertising, prayer, transportation and communication.

Already the group has been advertising with signs placed around the county. Bailey said about 20 of the 30 signs put out have been destroyed.
