VSU softball to honor eight seniors today vs. CBU

This weekend, the eight seniors on the Valdosta State softball roster will play at home for the final scheduled time.
Regardless of whether the top-ranked Blazers will host the regional tournament the first weekend in May, the seniors —Marti Littlefield, April Hutchens, Clare Wamsley, Colette Rollins, Julia Fink, Samantha Posey, Natalia Morozova and Alanna Hadley — will be honored in a ceremony between today’s games versus Christian Brothers University.
The group of seniors is the all-time winningest class to go through the VSU softball program. Heading into the weekend, the Blazers have won 190 games, compared to just 30 losses — 92 of those wins in conference play and 22 in postseason games. The team has won three straight Gulf South Conference championships, and the 2010 South Regional Championship, which earned the Blazers an appearance in the national championship tournament.
During the ’10 national tournament, the Blazers knocked off undefeated North Georgia en-route to a National Championship Game appearance, where they fell to Hawaii-Pacific, 4-3.
Littlefield, Hutchens, Wamsley, Rollins and Fink have been a part of all 190 wins, while Posey and Morozova joined the team prior to the start of the 2011 season, making the duo part of 82 wins. Hadley joined the team for this season only, but has made her impact felt; she leads the team with 21 wins in the circle.
In addition to team success, VSU’s 2012 softball seniors have also garnered individual accolades. The class can claim a GSC Freshman of the Year award, two All-American awards, a GSC All-Decade Team honor, eight All-GSC performances, six All-Region performances, four National Fastpictch Coaches’ Association All-American Scholar-Athlete seasons, 12 GSC Player of the Week awards and even a couple of ESPN interviews.
For Littlefield, the weekend could become even more special, as she needs just three home runs and five runs batted in to become the all-time leader in the Gulf South Conference. After a back-to-back sluggish weekends, Littlefield looks poised to break the records at home in front of the crowd she has been playing in front of for her four years.
While this weekend will not end the lustierest careers of this senior class, it does mark an end to the regular season. Moving forward, every game affects whether the Blazers win a championship or not.
Next weekend, VSU will try to defend its three straight GSC titles with the palying of the conference tournament in Southaven, Miss. The Blazers will serve as the No. 1 seed after posting the best conference regular season record.
Following the conference tournament, the Blazers will likely head home for the regional tournament, as they are currently ranked first in the South Region standings.
A win in the regions will give the Blazers another opportunity to play at home in front of their own fans, as they would host the Super Regional tournament — a best two-out-of-three series — the following weekend.
