Valdosta State learned its football playoff seed Sunday in the NCAA DII selection show, which aired online at 6 p.m.
After finishing the regular season undefeated, it was only natural the Blazers earned a No. 1 seed. Selection show host Will Hackett pointed out that VSU had the top rushing and passing numbers in the Gulf South.
Hackett added that Valdosta State’s four turnovers on offense were the best in the nation.
As a No. 1 seed, the Blazers are idle this week, and await the winner of No. 4 Miles (9-2) and Carson-Newman (9-2), which will be played at Miles.
First round play is Nov. 23. Valdosta State’s first tournament contest is Nov. 30. The national finals, should they make it that far, are set for Dec. 21 in McKinney, Texas.
The other two first round matchups in the Blazers’ section of the bracket are Virginia Union (8-3) at No. 2 Wingate (9-1) and Lenoir-Rhyne (9-2) at No. 3 West Alabama (9-1)
VSU and West Alabama are Gulf South rivals but did not play in the regular season because of Hurricane Helene.
Other No. 1 seeds are Kutztown (11-0), Ferris State (10-1) and Colorado State-Pueblo (10-1).
The Blazers go into the national championship tournament with a 10-0 record after defeating West Florida for the Gulf South title Friday, 28-7.
