Wellborn to celebrate 19th annual Blueberry Festival

The 19th annual Wellborn Blueberry Festival will be the first weekend of June, according to Wellborn Community Association President Wendell Snowden.
The event, which will be held at Andrews Square in Wellborn, is sure to provide arts, crafts, food, entertainment, competition and just good, clean fun for everyone to enjoy.
“We’re looking forward to another successful year,” Snowden said. “It is already a success because we will probably have 15 percent more vendors than last year.”
The theme for the 2012 festival is “Think Green,” Snowden explained. While it is only natural to think blue when considering blueberries, this year’s theme is rather fitting because everyone can remember the environment and the correlation of healthy blueberries and a clean, safe environment.
According to Snowden, the Parade Grand Marshall for this year’s event will be T. L. “Tommy” Andrews Jr. Another highlight of the upcoming festival is one of the original Highwaymen, Artist R. L. Lewis. Lewis will be display some of his work and paint during the festival on June 2.
The event, which is presented by the Wellborn Community Association Inc., already has over 25 sponsors, Snowden said, but additional sponsors are welcome. Interested sponsors may contact Snowden at (386) 963-1157 or email him at wendellsnowden@prodigy.net. Sponsor forms can also be downloaded by logging on to http://www.wellborncommunityassociation.com/Pages/BlueberryFestival.aspx.
The festivities will begin with arts and crafts and food vendors as they display and sale their products on Friday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. For those who cannot wait until Saturday morning’s blueberry pancake breakfast, it is recommended they stop by the WCA Country Store and purchase a blueberry pie, jelly, syrup or other delicious blueberry products.
There will be water walking, amusements, power jump and karaoke Friday evening, along with live entertainment by the Willow Creek Band.
According to Snowden, the bake-off registration will be from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., Friday, with the contest at 5:30 p.m. Those entering the contest must be at least 12 years of age. After the contest, there will be a tasting party and the cost to participate is only $3. In addition to Friday’s fun-filled activities, there will be a talent contest for children ages eight to 12. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m., with competition beginning at 6 p.m.
The fun will resume on Saturday with the annual pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Snowden reminds those who plan to participate that the last pancake breakfast ticket will be sold at 9:30 a.m.
One of the festival’s most cherished events is the parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m., Saturday. It will feature classic cars, floats and horses. In addition to the parade, there will be plenty of vendors selling arts and crafts, food and fun. Entertainment will be provided throughout the event and there will be no admission fee.
A talent contest for those age 13 and up will be held on Saturday. Registration for the contest will be at 1 p.m., with competition beginning at 1:30 p.m. The first place winner will carry home $500.
The Wellborn Community Association reminds everyone to take advantage of the family fun during the alcohol free event and everyone is encouraged to carry a lawn chair or blanket.
According to Snowden, there will be a free shuttle service between Wellborn Baptist Church and Andrews Square for easy parking.
