Camp Weed will be invaded tomorrow with 5,500 Warriors.
Fire, tires, barbed wire and mud are obstacles to be expected and more at the Warrior Dash tomorrow at Camp Weed.
The Warrior Dash is the world’s largest running series. It is a 5K, or 3.02 miles, of obstacles sure to test one’s physical threshold. The event has been at more than 65 locations across the globe. The first heat starts at 10 a.m., with 600 Warriors, each half hour another 600 will start. The final heat at 2:30 p.m., has 156 Warriors racing to the finish.
According to Kaylyn Sutcliffe, an event coordinator for Red Frog Events, participants can anticipate an exciting day.
“There are a lot of new obstacles to the Warrior Dash this year that are bigger and badder. The mud pit is longer and the wall is about 15 feet tall,” Sutcliffe said. “Spectators are welcome. There will be live music, beer and turkey legs following the race.”
Although registration is closed for the race, spectators are encouraged to come join the festivities. The event is free but there is a charge for parking. There is no shuttle from the parking to the festivities and it is about a half of a mile walk.
The top three warriors overall for both men and women will receive a custom engraved steel warrior helmet. The top three times in each age division for both men and women will receive a steel warrior helmet trophy. If the creativity flows faster than the feet, there will be a prize for the craziest costume too.
“Costumes are highly encouraged! Contestants are called on stage where the winner is determined by audience applause. The best costume wins a prize,” according to the web site WarriorDash.com.
Warrior Dash is partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2012. The St. Jude Warriors program encourages Warrior Dash racers to fundraise for St. Jude. There will be a VIP area at the Dash for Warriors that raise more than $250 for St. Jude. There will be showers, catering and a lounge for the VIP Warriors.
“Warrior Dash hopes to raise more than $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the help of 2012 participants,” Yount stated.
Warrior Dash works with GreenSneakers, an organization that gives tennis shoes a second chance. In 2011, Warriors donated 500,000 pounds of tennis shoes.
While Warrior Dash may sound like a load of fun, it doesn’t come without its share of risks.
“There’s certainly risk involved in Warrior Dash, but we take every precaution possible to get you to the finish line safely. There will be paramedics and an ambulance on site in case of an emergency. You enter Warrior Dash at your own risk,” Warrior Dash officials stated.
