Valdosta State’s softball team defeated Tampa 4-1 on Sunday, and improved to 7-2 on the season.
The Blazers took the early lead with two runs in the first inning, then added runs in the third and sixth innings.
Freshman center fielder Courtney Albritton led VSU at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a home run and two runs scored. Marti Littlefield hit a two-run homer for the Blazers. Samantha Posey also had two hits.
Leading off the game, Albritton was hit by a pitch, then was sacrificed to second by Morgan Johnson. Littlefield stepped up to the plate and hit her first home run of the season to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
Albritton hit her second home run of the year in the third inning, making it 3-0.
In the top of the sixth, Posey led off with a single to left, Littlefield walked and Natalia Morozova reached first on a bunt, loading the bases. Then Clare Wamsley drew a bases loaded walk to score Fran Johnson, who was pinch running for Posey.
Tampa scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on Megan Paul’s pinch hit single, which scored pinch runner Taylor Collins.
VSU posted a 2-1 record at the Saint Leo Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
Valdosta State’s Alanna Hadley pitched a complete game. She gave up seven hits and one run, struck out four and walked four. Hadley improved to 4-1 on the season.
The Blazers were originally scheduled to play Lindenwood on Sunday, but the game was canceled because the Lady Lions had played a late game on Saturday.
Valdosta State will play its home opener on Wednesday, hosting a doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
