District champs thrice

The Melody Christian Academy Wildcats baseball team shut-out Hamilton County Friday night to secure the District 5-1A title.

Melody defeated the Hamilton County Trojans 11-0 in five innings behind senior Derek Johnson’s five hit shutout. Johnson struck out six batters in the five inning contest. Senior shortstop Zack Medearis was sensational in the field with several sparkling plays at shortstop. Offensively, Johnson paced the Wildcats with two extra base hits and five RBI’s. Senior catcher Alfred Deas added two base hits and a run scored. Winning team totaled 10 hits on the night.
“We played well and got good tempo from Johnson on the mound and put together a couple nice innings offensively,” said coach Harvey Williams.
This is Melody’s third straight year as district champions under the coaching expertise of Williams.
The Wildcats will host Bronson on Tuesday, May 7, at 4 p.m. in a regional semi-final game.
“We are very excited to be hosting a state playoff game on our home field,” said Williams. “We have been in this position the last two years. Our kids understand what’s at stake. We will be ready for the challenge.”
Williams said they are very proud of the five seniors who have meant so much to the program: Zack Medearis, Derek Johnson, Sean Beegle, Alfred Deas and Steffon Breedlove.

Against Branford
The Melody Wildcats defeated Branford 3-0 in the District 5-1A semi-final.
Junior David Duckwiler and senior Sean Beegle combined on a two hit shutout for the Wildcats. Duckwiler picked up his fifth win while Beegle earned his second save of the season. Offensively, Beegle led the Wildcats going three for for with a run scored. Juniors Tyler Jerkins and Trevor Barker chipped in with two hits each.
“This was the game we had to have,” said coach Harvey Williams. “It assures us a spot in the state playoffs. This is our goal each and every year.”
