VALDOSTA — Parker Greene of the Moody Support Committee recently accompanied Gov. Roy Barnes to Washington, D.C., to meet with high-ranking military officials to discuss the future of Georgia’s bases.

“We’re concerned that sooner or later there is going to be another BRAC (base realignment and closure), and we thought it would be best for the governor to talk to the service chiefs to demonstrate our commitment to the military in Georgia,” said Greene.

Greene said no other governor has ever taken the time to take such a trip to visit the Pentagon.

On June 19, Greene arranged a dinner and a social hour at a restaurant in Alexandria, Va., which was attended by both state senators, Sen. Zell Miller and Sen. Max Cleland, as well as almost the entire state congressional delegation and staff members.

At the dinner, Barnes thanked the state officials for their support of the military in Georgia and explained the purpose of his visit, which was to protect the state’s bases. Greene said the governor also wanted to become “more familiar” with the military establishment.
