Georgia Lottery spokeswoman Tandi Reddick says 37-year-old Carol Hicks won the money in an April 2 Fantasy Five drawing after her husband — a contractor working in Afghanistan — called and asked her to play the five winning numbers.

Hicks says she initially thought her win was an April fools’ joke and her family plans to use the money to pay off bills.

Since its inception in 1992, Georgia Lottery has given more than $14 billion to the state to fund educational programs — including the HOPE Scholarship and pre-kindergarten programs.
