Be aware of fraud: Know how to identify a FEMA representative

ATLANTA – Survivors of the recent Georgia disasters should be aware that con artists may try to obtain money or steal personal information through fraud or identity theft. All FEMA staff and housing inspectors carry official identification with photo IDs. Ask to see it. Be cautious if somebody asks for your nine-digit registration number.

A FEMA inspector will never ask for this information. They already have it in their records. FEMA inspectors never require banking or other personal information such as a Social Security number. If you suspect fraud or fraudulent activity report it immediately. Call your local police or sheriff’s office or you can call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721.
