VALDOSTA — The basketball season is heating up in Valdosta, with excitement building around the high school’s teams following an impressive showing in the 2nd Annual Titletown Tip-Off. With a mix of young talent and seasoned leadership, both the boys’ and girls’ squads have their sights set on a successful year.

Valdosta High School’s basketball teams made a strong statement at the tournament, which was on Nov. 16. The boys’ and girls’ teams showcased their potential, starting with dominant victories. The girls defeated Mitchell County 62-34, while the boys routed Early County 75-36.

The teams followed the tournament with games against the Dougherty Trojans and Ware County’s Gators. The boys’ team lost both games in a close contest, while the Lady ‘Cats split their games, beating Dougherty but falling to Ware. 

The head coach of the boys’ team, James Lee, emphasized the importance of growth throughout the season. 

“We’re a young team for the most part. We have a lot of first-year varsity guys, so just focusing on that IQ of the game has been the biggest thing for us,” Lee said. “The guys have done a great job so far.”

The offseason was spent fine-tuning skills and fostering chemistry, with the boys’ team gaining experience through competitive summer play. Lee praised his team’s camaraderie: “I am really proud of this team. I think this is the closest team that I have been around since I have been here. They love being around each other and just have a great camaraderie.”

Coach Lee emphasized that senior point guard Jabarri Williams is a state-level talent who brings leadership and experience to the team. Williams is cited as a reason the team is so close, and his growth as a player and leader over the years has been extensive. 

Valdosta High’s roster boasts a standout group of seniors ready to leave their mark this season, earning high praise from Lee. Among them is Brandon Brown, a lethal sharpshooter and relentless rebounder whose presence on the court commands attention. Defensive powerhouse Jerry Butler brings intensity and grit, locking down shots while staying quick and aggressive.

Joining them are RaCobe Studevan and Braylan Deas, who add depth and versatility to the lineup. Together, these seniors form the backbone of the Wildcats, setting the tone for a team hungry for success.

Coach Lee and the Wildcats deeply value the unwavering support of their fans, recognizing the vital role it plays in the team’s success, especially with a young team.

“I am loving what we are building over here. I think it is going to be a great year for us,” said Lee. “Even though we are young, we are still going to be competitive.”

As the Wildcats hit the road for some tournament games, fans can catch both the boys’ and girls’ teams back in action on Dec. 6, when they take on Worth County at the ‘Cat Cage.
