Coach Jerry Tyson is sort of the “new kid on the block” at Lafayette as he takes over the reins of the girls volleyball team replacing Traci Barnes who moved up to the varsity this season. It will be the first for Coach Tyson at Lafayette but no stranger to the world of athletics. He will be coaching basketball and softball at the Middle School this school year.
The junior varsity lost several key players from last year in a move up to the varsity. But Coach Tyson likes the players who are returning. “We have several players coming back and some new ones coming in,” he said. “Some of them are real athletic, we just have to teach them the fundamentals. I think we are going to be okay.”
The junior varsity posted seven victories last season, the most wins in the past three seasons. “We are going to try and put things together this year and improve on that record,” Coach Tyson said. “We feel we can have a winning season. “We have Cara Young and Brandie (Marlenee) coming back ,they had a good year last season. We are really impressed with Kelsey Land, just a seventh grader and has been very impressive. We have a couple of good servers.”
Coach Tyson wants to bring excitement to the team this year and teach the fundamentals of playing volleyball. We want them to play hard but have fun. We want to get them ready for varsity next year.”
