VALDOSTA — SGMC Health recently announced Kamil Hanna, MD, a cardiac electrophysiologist, has successfully performed the first Farapulse Pulsed Field Ablation procedure in the region.
This cutting-edge technology, developed by Boston Scientific, represents a new era in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and other complex cardiac arrhythmias, SGMC Health said in a press release.
The Farapulse Pulsed Field Ablation System is a revolutionary approach to cardiac ablation, using pulsed electric fields to precisely target and eliminate abnormal heart tissue responsible for irregular heart rhythms, the hospital said. Unlike traditional thermal ablation techniques that use extreme heat or cold, PFA delivers a controlled electrical pulse that disrupts the arrhythmia while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This makes it a safer and more effective treatment option for AFib patients.
Dr. Hanna, a leader in advanced electrophysiology procedures at SGMC Health, expressed his excitement about offering this advanced therapy to patients.
“The Farapulse system offers us an innovative and more precise way to treat patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. Its ability to selectively target arrhythmogenic tissue while sparing other critical structures marks a major advancement in electrophysiology,” said Dr. Hanna. “We’re thrilled to bring this first-of-its-kind technology to SGMC Health, improving outcomes and enhancing patient safety.”
Atrial fibrillation affects millions of Americans and can significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other complications. With the introduction of the Farapulse system at SGMC Health, patients in South Georgia now have access to one of the most advanced ablation therapies available, offering new hope for long-term relief from the burdens of AFib, the press release said.
This innovative procedure is performed in the hospital’s state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab, staffed by an expert team of clinicians dedicated to delivering exceptional cardiac care, the health system said.
