Loaded down with hundreds of offers from colleges all over the country, Bruce Johnson has decided to attend the University of Miami. Johnson signed his letter of intent to play football as a Miami Hurricane in late June. Miami and Johnson didn’t need any more time to decide.

There were a lot of factors that contributed to Johnson’s decision. His uncle, Kelly Jennings, attends UM also on a football scholarship. Johnson attended the Larry Coker Football Camp this year in Miami, was scouted, and offered a scholarship.

“I only stayed for one day,” Johnson said about his visit to the football camp. “They were impressed and made me an offer.”

Johnson visited the UM campus when his uncle was given the tour and recently went back for his own tour.

“It’s a beautiful school,” Johnson said. “It’s very tropical.”

Johnson plays wide receiver and defensive back for Suwannee. He also plays on the special teams. As a Hurricane Johnson will be playing defensive back. His uncle, Jennings, also plays as a defensive back. Johnson wants to redshirt his freshman year. As a sophomore he could be competing for the same position as his uncle.

“My favorite position is defensive back,” Johnson said. “I like the opportunity to make interceptions.”

Johnson will also play on the Cane’s special teams returning punts and running kick-off returns.

Johnson’s family is happy with his decision. Johnson’s mother Cassandra Gerberich is Jennings’ brother. The family already makes the long drive to Miami to attend all of Jennings’ home games. Now they can watch both of their Canes play football.

“We don’t miss any of them,” Johnson’s step-dad Ned Gerberich said.

Johnson has a 3.0 GPA and according to his mother is “college ready.” Johnson has already passed his FCAT tests. He plans to major in business management.

Johnson is also a state qualifier in the mens’ hurdle events on the Suwannee track team. Jennings runs track as well. Johnson says he might go out for the Hurricane track team. The two could be competing together in track as well. According to Johnson, Jennings is excited about having his nephew at Miami.

“Bruce has made us proud, kept his grades up and made the right choices,” said Cassandra Gerberich.

Johnson is still a member of the Suwannee Bulldog football team. He’s number eight. Watch him play for the Dogs in his last season on the team. Good luck Bruce. Go Dogs!
