Doctor Carl Jackson Vipperman

March 27, 1928 – June 28, 2014

Doctor Carl Jackson Vipperman, retired Professor of History at the University of Georgia, died June 28, 2014.
The seventh of eleven children born to William Frederick and Sally Brown Vipperman, Carl was delivered by a midwife on March 27, 1928 in the family home in rural Raleigh County between Sophia and Glen White, West Virginia.
Educated in the public schools of Raleigh County, Carl graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, joined the U.S. Army, and served with the Seventh Infantry Division in Korea (1946-48). He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (AB in English), and taught in the public schools of Georgia and Florida. At Jacksonville he met and married (1957) fellow-teacher Reginald Fay Graham, daughter of Oscar J. and Renabel Graham of Seneca, South Carolina. With Reggie’s support and encouragement, Carl earned graduate degrees in history at the University of Georgia (MA) and the University of Virginia (PhD). He taught three years at the College of Charleston (SC), then joined the University of Georgia history faculty (1967). At Georgia he wrote scholarly biographies of two South Carolinians: Rawlins Lowndes (USC Press) and William Lowndes (UNC Press). His honors and awards include the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Fellowship at UVa and the Phi Alpha Theta Teaching Award at UGa. The year after he retired (1994) the History Department at UGa established the Carl Vipperman Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in his honor. In retirement each summer for ten years he lectured on cruise ships of the American Canadian Caribbean Cruise Line.
He is survived by his wife Reggie, his son Carl, Jr. and wife Vickie Cooper of Nashville, Tenn., two sisters, Rosalie (Mrs. Charles) Mitchell of Jasper, Florida and Vivian (Mrs. David) Barry of Gainesville, Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Athens. A reception followed at the church. James Daniel “Danny” Tyre, Jr.

James Daniel “Danny” Tyre, Jr., age 45, of Jasper, Fla. passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2014 at Shands Live Oak Hospital in Live Oak, Fla. 
Danny was a native of Homestead, Fla. where he lived most of his life. Danny was self-employed and kept himself busy with one project or another all of his adult life. He decided to leave Homestead almost a year ago and move to North Florida. 
Survivors include his parents, James Daniel (Sr.) and Sharon Nicholson Tyre; one sister, Debra Tyre and her fiancé Keith Shiver of Eridu, Fla.; one nephew, Anthony Ugalde; many, many close family and friends also survive.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m.  Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, Fla.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on the day of the service beginning at 3 p.m.
