Area student “mathletes” win regional math competition

- Mathcounts for middle school was held at the Mathis City Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 27, for area schools. Highland Christian Academy’s team placed 3rd in team overall and Chunjin Park placed 3rd in the individual competition and 3rd in the countdown round. Joining Chunjin Park are team members, Kessiney Neal, Daniel Weaver and Emma Evans. Cary Dowse is their teacher.
VALDOSTA — A team of 6th, 7th and 8th grade mathletes from Hahira Middle School has won the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS contest. Members from the winning team are: Joyce Liu, Adam Shoemaker, Anthony Petti, and Aubrey Washnock. Diane Hiers is the coach of the team from Hahira Middle School. The top individual scorer this year was Albert Kang from Valdosta Middle School.
The Hahira Middle School team will represent the South Georgia region at the State Competition to be held Monday, March 23rd at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Other top scoring individuals representing the South Georgia Region at State include: Jackson Page from Valdosta Middle School, Chunjin Park from Highland Christian Academy, Josephine Drake and Rich Beverly from Brookwood School, Cooper Evans from Lowndes Middle School, as well as, Trey Davis and Jordan Fields from Pine Grove Middle School. The top four individual scorers from the state competition will represent Georgia at the National Finals in May.
MATHCOUNTS is a combination math coaching and competition program and is sponsored locally by Innovate Engineering Solutions, the City of Valdosta Engineering Department, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority, Lindsey & Ritter, Inc., Lovell Engineering Associates, Cauthan Construction Company, James D Cone Architects, and Radney Plumbing. It is designed to answer the problem of poor math skills among U.S. students.
