United States. Santopietro provides behind-the-scenes details of one of America’s most beloved movie classics. It gives readers an opportunity

to learn why the

movie has captivated audiences worldwide for 50 years.

The inspiring story of the von Trapp family was first performed on Broadway and featured Mary Martin as Maria von Trapp. After the success of the stage show, 20th Century Fox purchased the movie rights; however, it was postponed for several years due to funding issues.

Robert Wise was selected as the director and producer. He had recently completed “West Side Story” and wanted Audrey Hepburn to play Maria. However, he discovered Julie Andrews after seeing footage of her performance in “Mary Poppins,” which had not been released. Christopher Plummer was selected to play Capt. von Trapp.

Several well-known actors of today auditioned for various parts in the movie, including Mia Farrow and Richard Dreyfus, and even some of the Osmond brothers were screen-tested.

Santopietro’s book also includes personal accounts from members of the

real von Trapp family. Readers will learn how the von Trapp family’s story became a Broadway production, with music composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The movie had opened to a small crowd before it became America’s third-highest grossing film of all time behind “Gone with the Wind” and “Star Wars.”

Santopietro’s previous books include “The Importance of Being Barbara” and “Considering Doris Day.”
