On Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m., a memorial service was held for the late Harlow “Broughton” Land of Mayo at the Dorothy Land Hatchbend boat ramp in the southeast corridor of Lafayette County. Land worked for Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD) as a Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist from April 2005 through December 2012. He passed away on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at the age of 35.

Land’s specialty was combining results of hydrologic data collection and it seemed an appropriate remembrance to dedicate a memorial totem pole along the Suwannee River to his memory, according to SRWMD Human Resources Administrator Lisa Cheshire.
Aside from family and friends in attendance at the memorial service, Lafayette County Commissioners Donnie Hamlin, Anthony Adams and Earnest Jones were on hand to pay their respects, as well.
Opening comments were offered by SRWMD Interim Executive Director Carlos Herd, followed by a tribute from Land’s friend Zac Adams, and then a family friend, Dr. Sid Bradley. Land’s father, Hank Land, gave closing comments.
Other family members in attendance were Nelle Land, Laura, Dan and Elizabeth Broughton, DaConceicao, Garrison Land, Annie Winnett and Keating Land.
