MOODY AIR FORCE BASE — Get ready for a great bargain — Moody Air Force Base will host a combination garage sale and flea market May 11.

The first-time event, hosted by the 347th Services Squadron, will be from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., across from the bases’ perimeter on Bemiss Road.

Summer months at Moody are traditionally a time when military members receive permanent change of station orders. As the movings begin, families in military housing advertise garage sales to meet weight restrictions associated with PCS moves. This has been the case in the past, but the events of Sept. 11 have changed the situation.

“Usually, people have individual garage sales out of their homes and put some signs in the neighborhood, and they may get a classified ad,” said Maj. Steve Kimball, commander 347th SS. “Since we’re in a higher condition of force protection conditions and entry to the base is restricted, we thought it would be a good idea to consolidate as families and have a really big event. It’ll be outside the base perimeter, so folks from downtown can join us.”

There are about 44 booths rented for the families to sell their items, and there will also be four vendors selling fish and tackle and model airplanes. There will also be two normal flea market vendors with an assortment of everything, said Frank Harrison, 347th SS equipment manager.

Depending on the success, the sale could become a recurring event, said Buddy Chapman 347th SS, community support flight chief.

Kimball said the booths will be set up under a 100 foot fest tent with an additional 30 by 30 square foot tent. “That’s a lot of canvas,” he said.
