VALDOSTA — As an English teacher, Caterina Orr regularly edited and corrected her students’ writing.

Yet, she often encountered the same situation faced by other English teachers, as well as published authors and even newspaper personnel. Unpublished writers approached Orr, asking her for grammar instructions, writing advice, thoughts on writing a book, or if she would read their books. It happened often.

Orr enjoyed the work. So much so she made writers, writing, and book publishing her business.

Orr started Get It “Write” Consulting.

Through her Valdosta-based literary business, Orr offers authors advice on writing and structuring books. She edits, proofreads and designs manuscripts. Get It “Write” then publishes the books, and she helps market the books.

Writers can use part of Get It “Write’s” services or sign up for the entire process.

“I started by offering proofreading,” Orr said. “Then people started coming with their stories. They needed help telling their stories.”

Orr walked people through the process of writing their stories.

“Then they would ask, Can you help me publish my story?”

Orr researched the publishing industry. She earned a second master’s degree, one in publishing.

Orr’s Get It “Write” has published books by four Valdosta authors so far. They are Corine Thomas’ memoir “A Child Walking in a Woman’s Shoes,” Bernard Beaufort’s “Not All Men Are Bad,” Terri V. Steward’s “Praying While Hurt,” and Orr’s “Fun Church of Christ Skits.” Other books include LaToya Crawford’s “The ABC’s to Focus.”

While the first Get It “Write” books are locally based, she said the Internet has allowed her the opportunity to offer her services to writers both near and far.

“I love helping someone write their story and seeing it published because they don’t think it could ever be done,” Orr said. “I love doing what I think is my gift. I get a joy out of that.”

Orr is the fourth of five daughters of Laverne McHellen and the late Johnnie McHellen.

Caterina and husband Rozell Orr Sr. have three children, Rozell Orr Jr., 21, Jada Orr, and Justice Orr, 16.

Caterina Orr has taught at Valdosta High School, and has taught English and African-American studies classes at Valdosta State University. She has worked with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority.

Yet, she said her work as a writing consultant has been most fulfilling.

“Writers struggling to find or tell their stories seem to be the authors I attract,” Orr said. “… My job is having the eye for a good story. I seem to have an intuitiveness for what makes a good story. As a teacher that’s what I do. I evaluate writing.”
