Motorcyclist killed in crash

A vehicle-motorcycle crash at SR 49 (US 129) and 232nd St., Saturday night, at approximately 8:15 p.m. resulted in one fatality, and two others injured, one seriously.

According to a report from Florida Highway Patrol, a 2003 Chevrolet SUV driven by Irby Ross Grant, 84, of 9346 232nd St. O’Brien was traveling southbound, and attempted a left turn, into his driveway, into the path of a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Charles Leswing, Jr. of 15260 9th Drive, Live Oak, with his passenger Susan Leswing of the same address.

According to the FHP report Charles Leswing expired at the scene. Susan sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Shands of Gainesville. She underwent surgery on Sunday morning to repair broken bones and was expected to undergo further surgery.

According to the report the driver of the SUV turned into the path of the motorcycle causing it to strike the right side of the SUV.

Crash investigator was Trooper W. G. Creech. Homicide investigator was Cpl. Kevin Pace.

According to friends, Chuck and Susan Leswing were enroute home after attending a Christmas party in High Springs with the Christian Motorcyclist Association of which they are members. They had also attended Bethlehem Live located between High Springs and Alachua. Both are members of First Baptist Church in Branford. Mr. Grant was enroute home after having dinner with friends near O’Brien.

On Monday evening, W. C. and Louise Thomas, close friends of Chuck and Susan told the News that Susan has a lot of broken bones, her injuries are hip, ankle, shoulder and multiple others, but she is in good spirits.

The Thomas couple are in the same Christian Motorcycle Association with the Leswings.
