Rates for garbage and trash pickup in the Town of Branford increased with the approval of the town council on Tuesday, April 12.
Last month, it was determined that the garbage pickup rates would have to increase due to the increase in the costs the town was being charged by the contractor who collects the garbage.
During the March meeting, Council President Joe Cannon, told the council members that he and Town Clerk, Lori Frierson would discuss the rates and come up with a recommendation for the April meeting.
The recommendation is as follows: household garbage pickup from $12.50 to $15 per month. Light commercial pickups the cost will increase to $28, for medium pickups the cost will be $45, and heavy pickups will cost $125.
The recommendation was deemed expedient, and the ordinance was passed by the town council on Tuesday to go into effect immediately. It was adopted by emergency ordinance passage.
The matter of what days the collections would take place under the new agreement is still to be decided.
