Sherlon Retha Lovett

NASHVILLE — Sherlon Retha Lovett, 59, of Nashville died on Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 6, 1942, in Berrien County to the late William and Gladys Evelyn Hardy Gaskins. She was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Gaskins. She is survived by her husband, Mack Lovett of Nashville; one daughter, Katy Lovett of Nashville; one son, Steve Lovett of Nashville; one sister, Ora Mae Swain of Nashville; one brother, Derrell Gaskins of Seattle, Wash. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Warner Guthrie and the Rev. Junior Swain officiating. Burial will be held in Sparks City Cemetery. James W. Nichols

OLYMPIA, Wash. — James W. Nichols passed away on Nov. 22, 2002, in Olympia, Wash., after a short illness. He was born on Nov. 22, 1924, to the former Pauline Folsom and Conrad Lundy Nichols in Morven, Ga. James was retired from Boeing Aircraft, and Tacoma Boatbuilding, having lived in Washington for 40 years. He was a WW II veteran, and participated in the D-Day Invasion, the Belgian Bulge, and Battle of the Rhineland Campaigns. James was awarded three Battle Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart for his service. He also served during the Korean War. James survivors are his wife, Lucille, of Olympia, Wash., his son, James Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Sandra Murray, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Paula Beth Marshall, of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great- grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin P. Nichols and Norman C. Nichols, both of Valdosta. Joel Rooks

NASHVILLE — Joel Rooks, 75, of Nashville died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence. He was born on March 30, 1927, in Berrien County to Johnathan Akerd and Lillie Winkles Rooks. He was a retired mechanic, Army veteran of WW II, Mason and Shriner and member of Nashville Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Sue McClain Rooks of Nashville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherlyn and Ken Barnett of Greenville, S.C., Deborah and Charles Mathis of Nashville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Brenda Rooks, Jr. of Calhoun, Gary “Curly” and Pat Rooks of Nashville; six grandchildren; and three brothers, J. D. Rooks of Ariz., Gerald Rooks of Dublin and Fred Rooks of Ashburn. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Smith officiating. Burial will be held in Nashville Memorial Gardens. Edward Raymond Smith Sr.

BARWICK– Edward Raymond Smith Sr., 79, of Barwick, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at his residence in Barwick following a lengthy illness. A life long resident of Brooks County, he was the son of Curtis and Annie Lindsey Smith. He was the retired owner operator of Smith Hardware and Service Station in Barwick, member and deacon of the Barwick Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith, Barwick; nine children, Wanda Smith, Barwick, Glenda (Gary) McLaughin, Apopka, Fla., Patty Smith, Barwick, Missy (Carl) Griffin, Barwick, Edward Raymond (Janice) Smith Jr., Thomasville, Jimmy (Margie) Smith, Lakeland, Fla., Gary (Lisa) Smith, Barwick, Steve (Cathy) Smith, Lakeland, Fla., Greg (Jean) Smith, Thomasville; 17 grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; three sisters, Opal Hubbard, Cordele, Helen Sutton, Alto, Ga., Margaret Webb, Quitman; and one brother, Colon Smith, Thomaston, Ga. Helen Marie McLean Smith Tucker

HOMERVILLE — Mrs. Helen Marie McLean Smith Tucker, 86, of Homerville passed away Tuesday morning in the Clinch Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Clinch County, she was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church, Women’s Missionary Society, Women’s Club and the Eastern Star. She was the daughter of the late William Wright McLean and Janie Annabel Cook McLean. She was the widow of Gordan Arthur Smith, Sr. and Russall Howard Tucker. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Gordan Arthur Smith, Jr. and Julie Smith, Savannah; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Henry Selph, Homerville; six grandchildren, Lajuanta Mattox, Homerville, Jimmy Edenfield, Mobil, Ala., Danny Edenfield, Homerville, John Leland Edenfield, St. George, Ivan Smith and Coleman Smith, both of Atlanta; 11 great- grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jessica, Jennifer, Danna, Kayla, Cora, Joni, Paige and John Edenfield and Daniel and Lucas Cason; two great- great- grandchildren, Breanna Cason and LeLe Cason; and several other relatives. Funeral services for Mrs. Tucker will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Homerville First Baptist Church. Burial will be held in the Pine Forest Cemetery. Twila Carter, 52, of Valdosta died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Heritage House Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Lake Park Church of God with burial to follow in Lake Park Cemetery. Cordia Mae Kotulak, 85, of Valdosta passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Crestwood Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in Louisville, Ky. — Purvis Funeral Home of Adel is in charge of local arrangements.
