Roy Gay Brinkley
LAKE CITY, Fla. — Roy Gay Brinkley, 59, of Lake City, passed away Tuesday night at the Veteran’s Administration Regional Medical Center, Lake City, following an extended illness. A native of Clinch County, he had lived in Lake City for the last four years. He was a member of the New Vision Church of God in Homerville and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Herman C. Brinkley and Mary Taylor Brinkley. Survivors are two sons, David Brinkley, New York, and Shannon Brinkley, Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Gloria Coleman, Lake City; two brothers, Herman Brinkley, Lake City, and Ted Smith, Homerville; and several other relatives. Funeral services for Mr. Brinkley will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Homerville New Vision Church of God with the Rev. Dolphus Smith and the Rev. Art Smith officiating. Burial will be held in the Pine Forest Cemetery. Mr. Brinkley will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today with visitation after 5 p.m. Mr. Brinkley will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services. — Roundtree Funeral Home
Ruth McLeod Erickson
VALDOSTA — Ruth McLeod Erickson, 90, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Erickson was born in Minneapolis, Minn., to the late John A. and Margaret Miller McLeod and had lived in Valdosta since 1982. She was a retired private piano teacher and homemaker and was of the Assembly of God Faith. Survivors include a brother, Donald McLeod of Valdosta; four nieces, Martha Jones of Valdosta, Roberta Jackson of Portland, Ore., Angelyn Rios of Atlanta, and Lamoine Cochrane of San Diego, Calif.; five nephews, Earl McLeod of Hualapai, Ariz., Milton Casebere of Mankato, Minn., Kenneth McLeod of Ettrich, Wis., Philip McLeod of Phoenixville, Pa., and Lloyd McLeod of Olive Branch, Miss.; several great-nieces and nephews and many friends. Mrs. Erickson was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll L. Erickson. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mack V. Giddens
SPARKS — Mack V. Giddens, 66, of Sparks, passed away early Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his residence after a short illness. He was born in Berrien County and lived in Cook County many years. He was the owner and operator of Giddens Seafood and Restaurant before his retirement. He attended Beulah Holiness Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Conger Giddens of Sparks; daughters and son-in-law, Patricia and Tommy Barber of Nashville, Monica Giddens of Sparks; sons and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Ann Giddens, Adel, Travis Giddens, Sparks; grandchildren, Shane and Pam Giddens, Adel, Margo Harris, Sparks, Tommy, Donna, Jessica, Katie and Emily Gandy, all of Lenox, Scott, Christy Barber, both of Vidalia, Johnny and Julie Barber of Valdosta; great-grandchild, Aubri Giddens of Adel; sisters, Johnnie Faye Edwards, Powder Springs, Eldaris Smelser, Texas; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beulah Holiness Baptist Church in Cook County with burial in the Church Cemetery. Bill (W.J.) Humma
VALDOSTA — Bill (W.J. ) Humma, 78, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his home. Born on Feb. 11, 1923, in Metropolis, Ill., he was the son of the late Harry H. and Anne Johnston Humma. Col. Humma was formerly of Atlanta before making his home in Valdosta in 1993. He was a 1944 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy and he received his master’s degree from George Washington University in International Relations. During World War II, he was an Army Air Corp B29 pilot. After 27 years of service in the U.S. Army, Col. Humma’s military career had spanned World War II, the Korean
Conflict and the Vietnam Era. Retiring in 1971 from the U.S. Army, he worked as Director of Sanitation and later as Director of Purchasing and Contracting for DeKalb County, Ga., until 1988. He was a member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Retired Officers Association, Assc. of U.S. Army, American Public Works Association, Georgia Chapter President in 1976, President of the Institute of Solid Waste in 1978, a member of the House of Delegates in 1981 and Chairman in 1985. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn F. Humma of Valdosta; three daughters, Marilyn H. Wagner of Ann Arbor, Mich., Michele Humma (Stiebling) of Duluth, Melissa Humma (Baggett) of Valdosta; seven grandchildren, Melanie O’Rourke, William Wagner, Kristen Wagner, Lauren Wagner, Robert Wagner, William Christopher Baggett, Cole Baggett; two great-grandchildren, Brittani Garrett and Dakin O’Rourke; one brother, Harry Humma of Evansville, Ind. He will always be loved and remembered by his family and friends. Going home services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The Rev. John O’Brien will officiate. An interment service with Full Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. There will be a rosary service held at 7 p.m. on Friday with visitation following until 9 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mary Alice Brogdon Pevy
JASPER, Fla. — Mary Alice Brogdon Pevy, 67, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at her home. The Alapaha native was a homemaker and former resident of White Springs, Fla. She is survived by her husband, Jerry H. Pevy, Jasper; two daughters, Rhonda Cantrell (Chris), Lexington, S.C., and Kathy Taylor (Keith), Cordova, Tenn.; three sisters, Dorothy Railey, Martinez, Willie Lee Railey and Erma Davis, both of Alapaha; four grandchildren, Nikki Taylor, Craig Cantrell, Mitchel Cantrell and Jamie Taylor. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home. ATLANTA — John Samuel Jr., 72, of Atlanta, passed away Sept. 22, 2001 in Atlanta after a brief Illness. He leaves to mourn his loss one son, John Samuel Fluellen; three sisters, Julia Harrell, Eunice Smith of Cleveland, Ohio and Doris Cox of Valdosta; one brother, William of Cleveland, Ohio. VALDOSTA — Julia Louise Warren, 65, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 6, 1935, in Berrien County to the late Lyman and Minnie Julia Hall Gaskins. She was a homemaker and owned A-1 Cleaning Service. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lyman Gaskins Jr. She is survived by three daughters, Judy Burgess of Valdosta, Jean Russell of Adel, Phyllis Patnode of Jackson, Mich.; one brother, A.W. Gaskins, of Meridian, Miss.; seven grandchildren, Lynn Anderson, Marvin and Dee Tullis, Chris Burgess, Julie Bonham, Jason McCall, Chris Patnode, Latisha Patnode; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Anderson and Clair Tullis. illness. He was born and had lived in Lowndes County most of his life. Survivors include one sister, Ouida Brock of Bainbridge; one brother, William O.
