Jaley Mosley reads a 9/11 tribute before a moment of silence. Taryn Maund and Marley Singletary wait to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

The current students at Lafayette Elementary School had not been born 14 years ago when nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Perhaps it is for this reason that it is so important that the school takes the time to explain to the students what happened on that day and we remember the 9/11 victims.

At 8:46 a.m., the time in which the first Trade Center building was attacked 14 years ago, LES Student Government President Jaley Sullivan paid tribute to the victims by reading a short summary over the school’s intercom of the events that happened that day. The school observed a moment of silence before Taryn Maund and Marley Singletary led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Many of the LES teachers showed Discovery Education’s online streaming videos recounting the events of that day. Some classes had special art activities as a part of their 9/11 lesson. An American flag was draped above the intersection of the sidewalk connecting the four different wings of the school. A flag was placed on each table in the cafeteria and in the school’s memory garden.
