The Suwannee High School girls basketball team faced off against Eastside in a home game last Thursday night. This would be the Lady Dogs’ last game of the week as the game against Columbia was moved due to the Suwannee football playoff game. Unfortunately, the Suwannee girls ended their week with a 44-41 loss to Eastside on their home court.
The Lady Dogs (2-2, 0-1 district) came in to Thursday’s game trying to avoid a second straight loss after losing a district game to Wakulla earlier in the week. Suwannee indeed came out motivated early in the game as they played hard and jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the first quarter.
The second quarter would prove to be the downfall for the Lady Dogs. Suwannee struggled to get things going on the offensive end in the second period, the defense also struggled throughout the quarter as Suwannee would be outscored 20-7 during the second quarter. At the halftime buzzer Suwannee would trail Eastside 24-19.
After halftime, Suwannee came out determined on the defensive end, holding Eastside to seven points in the quarter. Suwannee would score 10 of their own to go in to the fourth quarter trailing 31-29. Both teams would play hard in the fourth quarter as they would go back and forth for the duration of the period. It would come right down to the last play where Suwannee was unable to score to tie the game. Eastside would take the fourth quarter 13-12, which would give them the 44-41 victory over Suwannee.
Kyra McClendon (#15) was again the high scorer for the Lady Dogs with 10 points in the game.
“The girls played with a lot of effort and hustle,” said Coach Brian Bullock.
The next game home game for the Lady Dogs will be a district game against Rickards at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec 1.
