VALDOSTA — South Georgians are sharing prayers and blood for the victims of the mass shooting during the weekend at the Pulse night club in Orlando.

South Georgia Pride and One The Same of South Georgia have scheduled a candlelight vigil for the victims of Orlando, according to the organizations.

South Georgia Pride is a Valdosta-based organization “benefiting the rights, equality and general well being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of South Georgia.”

The vigil will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 3565 Bemiss Road, according to organizers. The vigil is expected to last about an hour.

Residents across South Georgia gave blood donations in to help and honor those injured and killed in the mass shooting incident, according to the American Red Cross.

“The thoughts and deepest sympathies of the entire American Red Cross family are with the people of Orlando and those affected by Sunday morning’s tragic shooting,” according to a statement released by the American Red Cross. “Local Red Cross volunteers are supporting emergency responders by providing snacks and water, and the Red Cross is coordinating closely with local officials to determine how we can best support the affected community over the coming days and weeks.

“While we do not typically serve hospitals in the Orlando area, the Red Cross is providing a small number of blood products to support Florida hospitals in response to the shooting, and we stand ready to provide additional blood and blood products as needed.”

Georgia political leaders issued statements late Sunday night regarding the shooting.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., said in a statement: “Acts of terrorism such as this should only strengthen our resolve as Americans to protect our freedoms and the ideals that make our country great. Radical terrorism is a threat to those ideals. We should pursue those responsible and those who support them with the full force and power of our country wherever the pursuit takes us. The people of Orlando, from the first responders to neighbors that woke up to this horrific news, continue stepping forward to help each other – whether it is directly as in the case of first responders, or by giving blood and raising up prayers. I thank each of them as we pray for our nation.”

Sen. David Perdue, R-GA, said in a statement: “My heart breaks for those injured and killed this morning in this horrific act of terror. Bonnie and I join our fellow Georgians in lifting up the victims and their families during this devastating time. We also offer our support to the brave law-enforcement officials and the state of Florida as they work to aid the victims and investigate this reprehensible act of mass violence.”
