History center has new operating hours
DALTON, Ga. — Crown Gardens and Archives/Historical Center in Dalton has new operating hours. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule a Saturday time for research, call the center 48 hours in advance at (706) 278-0217. The building may be rented for special events and meetings in the evenings and on weekends. Call Vallarie Pratt, executive director of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, to discuss rental fees and available dates.
Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society presents Artifact ID Day
Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society will present the 10th annual Artifact Identification Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at the Old Capital Museum. Archaeologists from the Middle Georgia area will be at Georgia’s Old Capital Museum to identify “found” objects such as rocks, Indian artifacts, pottery, farm implements, and other curious objects. In addition to touring the museum and visiting with the archaeologists, young visitors will want to be on hand at 2 p.m. when Museum Director Dr. Amy Wright opens the Native American Traveling Trunk and shares stories, games, and artifacts. Back to School Bash at Tift Co. Health Department
TIFTON, Ga. – Tift County Health Department has planned its sixth annual Back to School Bash in conjunction with Tift Regional Medical Center, Tift County Commission on Children & Youth and the Jay Deason Fund for July 22. Any child entering a Georgia school for the first time will need a Georgia Immunization Certificate (Form 3231), a certified birth certificate and a hearing, vision, dental and nutrition screening (Form 3300). Students born on or after Jan. 1, 2002, and entering the 7th grade need proof of an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster and adolescent meningococcal vaccines. All of these services are available anytime at the Tift County Health Department; however, they will be the focus of the day on July 22. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at Tift County Health Department (305 E. 12th St.). Georgia Farm Bureau accepting entries for hay contest & hay directory
MACON, Ga. – Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) members who grow Bermuda grass hay are encouraged to enter the 2016 GFB Quality Hay Contest. Hay entered in the contest will be tested at the University of Georgia Testing Lab using the Relative Forage Quality (RFQ) Test, which predicts fiber digestibility and likely animal intake of hay. Prizes will be presented to the top five producers. The first place winner will receive the free use of a Vermeer 504N baler for one year courtesy of the Vermeer Manufacturing Company. Celebrate Metcalfe Heritage Day
THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Metcalfe Heritage Day is 2 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday at Metcalfe Community Center, corner of Broad and Reynolds streets. The event is hosted by Commercial Bank, Metcalfe Heritage Society and Metcalfe Community Association. Officials are planning a picnic fare including hot dogs, watermelon, finger foods and lemonade. Attendees will learn more about this small south Georgia town when a speaker from Commercial Bank tells about the bank and its beginnings. All of the renovated stores on Reynolds Street will be open so visitors can see how creativity, hard work and the love of things old can turn the forgotten and crumbling into the viable and new again. Hear historic porch stories, view a Historic Metcalfe photo exhibit, activities and coloring pages for children. The event is free and everyone is welcome, organizers said. United Way conducts open gouse and ribbon cutting ceremony
LAKE CITY, Fla. — United Way of Suwannee Valley conducted an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday evening at the organization’s new location at 871 SW State Road 47, Lake City. Gary Godwin, United Way Board of Directors President for 2016-2017, welcomed guests and recognized Jim Moses, who chaired the Building Committee, which researched potential sites before making a selection. Moses noted for 48 years the local United Way served our community in donated facilities. He recognized the Persons family and the City of Lake City for their generosity in providing a location for the United Way in previous years.
Summer outdoor movie coming to Adel
ADEL, Ga. —Summer Outdoor Movie Night will be held at 8:30 p.m. July 22 at the Cook High School football field, 1600 Massee Post Road in Adel. The movie “Inside Out,” will be shown. Cost: $5 per Adult; $2 for children 12 and under. Sponsored by the Adel-Cook County Chamber of Commerce. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No outside food or drink; bring blankets or lawn chairs. All proceeds will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club.
