Griffin Collier reels off a 15-yard run late in the first quarter Friday to get down to Turner County’s 12. On the next play, he would throw a touchdown to Fred Lloyd.

TIFTON, Ga – During a span of six passes over the first and second quarters Friday night, Griffin Collier threw for four touchdowns.

The four touchdown tosses and five Tift County sacks set the pace for their scrimmage against Turner County and Blue Devils finished the warm-up part of their schedule with a 31-6 victory.

Three different receivers hauled in the points for the Devils, which saw the distances increase with every score. Rashod Bateman started them off with a 6-yard score in the opening quarter. Fred Lloyd went for 12 in the second and was quickly followed by an 18-yard catch by Deonte Calhoun. The period’s final offensive play was Collier’s pass to Bateman, which covered 83 yards.

Rosendo Ramirez added a fourth quarter field goal before Turner was able to crack the scoreboard.

After a combined 30 untimed plays by the junior varsities of both teams, the varsity players went to work. The sides played four 10-minute quarters. Kickoffs and punts were permitted, but none were rushed and the ball could not be advanced.

Tift started with possession and after a 10-yard run by Josh Patrick on the first snap, Collier just missed on his first pass attempt. The next four would be successful, though as he hit Lloyd for 14 to advance to the Rebel side of the field.

Patrick caught a short pass and Collier lost two on a rush before he connected on the first of several long passes for both teams. Bateman took the ball down to the 7 and two plays later, had his number called again for the first points of the day at 6:05. Fernando Ramirez made the extra point.

The Rebels also had an eventful first possesion. Backed up to his own 12 after a penalty, Ontaria Wilson moved into Tift territory on his 55-yard catch off the arm of Tyler Moore. Another penalty put them closer to midfield and while they picked up 18 of it back, Turner was forced to fourth down. They opted to go for it, but Moore was sacked by Cody Thompson.

Tift’s scoring drive on its second touchdown would go even shorter. Collier helped himself out with a long run to the 12 then on the first play of the second quarter hooked up with Fred Lloyd in the middle of the endzone. Fernando Ramirez was again true and the Devils had a 14-0 lead at 9:52.

The lead increased to 21-0 at 7:52.

A Turner punt fell dead at the Rebel 47. A pass to Brant Watson on the right sideline got them down to the 18. The next snap went to the left side, where Deonte Calhoun found some blocking and went untouched into the endzone.

Moore got off his second big fly of the game on the Rebels’ ensuing possession as he hit Terry for 40. But once Terry was tackled there, the Turner drive stalled as Tift’s defensive wall sacked Moore again. Three more tries also gained no ground and with 44 seconds remaining, they ran out of downs at the 13.

If the Devils even considered running out the clock, they decided that giving their quarterback one last chance to air it out would not hurt. Collier wasted no time in making the most of his chance. A short screen to Bateman quickly turned into more as he hit the left sideline. One Rebel had a brief opportunity to catch him, but Bateman was too fast and the angle was too great. He crossed the goal line at 28 and after Fernando Ramirez connected on his fourth extra point of the half, Tift led 28-0.

The game switched to more of a running clock in the second half, one of many changes the locals made. Collier went to the sidelines for the rest of the game and Jake Hill went under center.

Hill connected on his first two passes, but the team had to give it back on downs. Turner had no luck as the clock ticked away the end of the third.

Mike Jones ripped the longest rush for either side of the night with 22 yards early in the 4th. Calhoun gained 16 more later in the drive. The drive stalled at the four, but Rosendo Ramirez was there to provide the final Devil points, a 21-yard field goal at 3:26.

Moore gave the Turner faithful their biggest highlight at 1:20 as he and Terry got together behind the Devil secondary for a 78-yard scoring pass. Jay Morris’ kick was no good.

Tift tried only one more play – a run – before time expired.

Collier was 9-for-11 passing and an unofficial 211 yards in his half of play. Hill completed four of his nine attempts for 43 yards. For Turner, Moore was 7-of-14 with one touchdown and 198 yards.

Bateman was the big receiver of the game, with 137 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. Lloyd finished with 38 yards and a touchdown on three. Terry of Turner nearly matched Bateman in yards. He had 118 on two receptions.

Jones led all rushers with 41 yards on six attempts.

Turner will start their regular season Thursday at Dougherty. Tift will play in Statesboro Friday at 5 p.m. against South Effingham in the Erk Russell Classic.
