VALDOSTA — Mary L. Bean, 78, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was born in Mannington, W. Va. on Dec. 14, 1924, to the late Jake Arthur and Hazel Marie Talkington Robinson. She was a retired homemaker and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.
Mrs. Bean is survived by her two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ronnie Bean of Valdosta and Gregory and Joy Bean of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Louis Sees of Valdosta and Mary and Jerry Meier of Asheville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Timothy, Wendy, Tricia, Gregg, Katie, Lori and Mary; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Bean Jr., and a great grandson, William.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with burial in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Mike Broadwater and the Rev. Tom Daniel will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home. — Carson McLane Funeral Home
WAYCROSS — Warren Lott Hereford, 86, died Nov. 19, 2003, at Hospice of Golden Isles after an extended illness.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1917, in Waycross, the son of Frank Douglas Hereford and Clyde Lott Hereford. He was the great-grandson of two Waycross founders, Dr. Daniel Lott and Dr. Benjamin F. Williams. He was educated in Waycross schools and the University of Georgia. He lived most of his life in Waycross before moving to Dover Bluff in Camden County in 1995. He served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II. He was employed by the ACL/CSX Railroad for 37 years until his retirement in 1983.
He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Waycross, where he served as an elder, and was a member of Golden Isles Presbyterian Church, St. Simons Island, after moving to Camden County. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mable Hereford Varn, and two brothers, Frank Douglas Hereford, Jr. and Robert Thomas Hereford.
Surviving family members are his wife, Carolyn Varn Hereford; one daughter, Helen Clyde Hereford Shadrick and husband Jim; one son, Warren Lott Hereford, Jr. and wife Connie; seven grandchildren, James Shadrick, Jr. and wife Angel, Paul Shadrick and wife Kara, David Shadrick and wife Pamela, Stephen Shadrick and wife Paige, Warren Lott Hereford, III, and wife Susan, Caroline Hereford Fuhrmann and husband Richard, and Leah McCall Hereford and fianc/e Andy Leaptrot; four great grandchildren, Breanna, Benjamin, Luke, and Joseph Shadrick. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Jacob E. Varn and William F. Varn; and two sisters-in-law, Annie Laurie Hereford and Margaret Varn Shave; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Miles-Odum Funeral Home, 130 Screven Avenue, Waycross, on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. preceded with visitation for family and friends at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Leon Lovett and Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery.

TIFTON — Carmen Riggins Peugh, 83, of Tifton died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman.
She was born on Feb. 1, 1920, in Colquitt County to the late George Washington and Katherine Elizabeth Sutton Riggins. She lived most of her life in Tifton. She was a mother, homemaker, collected clocks and angels and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ty Ty.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Willis and Linda Peugh of Tifton; son and his partner, Tony Peugh and Carl Davis, Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Kay Peugh Vance, Tifton and Mary Peugh and Eddie Taylor of Valdosta; grandchildren, Larry Coots, Anna Selph, Lisa and Danny Gay, Laurie and Todd Petersen, Allen and Stephanie Peugh, Jody Vance, Trey Taylor, Trent and Holly Taylor, and Courtney Peugh; great-grandchildren, Danny Gay, Jr., David Gay, Josh Selph, Melissa Selph, Michael Coots, Kaylyn Petersen, Joey Petersen, Bryce Peugh, Logan Peugh, Hayley Taylor; great-great-grandchildren, Courtney and Tyler Gay, Abigayle Selph, McKensie Gay, Jasimine Vincent, and Savannah Ray. Mrs. Peugh was the last living child of her family and was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 21, 2003, at First Baptist Church, Ty Ty with the Rev. Danny Jones officiating. Burial will be held in Crosland Baptist Church Cemetery. VALDOSTA — McKinley “Smitty” Smith, Jr. of Valdosta departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born July 31, 1932, to the late McKinley Smith, Sr. and Rosa L. Drye Smith.
He was born in Statenville, and graduated from Woods Chapel High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army and then attended Ft. Valley State College. He left Ft. Valley and began life in New York and was employed with the New York Transit Authority where he remained until he retired in 1992. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he served as president of the Men’s Usher Board. When he returned home to Valdosta, he reunited with his home church, Irvin Hill Baptist Church. He was a faithful member, served on the Usher Board and participated with the Youth Outreach Activities.
Smitty had a zest for life and leaves behind to cherish his memories three loving and devoted sisters, Katrina S. Hargrett, Ada Lee Hargett of Valdosta and Willie Mae Green of Breman; one beloved brother, Jimmie D. Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Frances Drye of Valdosta and Louise Drye of Belleville, Fla. Smitty’s life was furthered honored by a host of nieces, nephews, loving relatives and lifelong friends who will continue to celebrate his legacy.
Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Irvin Hill Missionary Baptist Church with remains placed in state at noon. The Rev. Marion Drye will officiate, the Rev. Ernest Usher, Pastor. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. Lonnie Davis, 66, of Lakeland, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, in Louis Smith Memorial Hospital following battle with cancer. Visitation will be held at Music Funeral Services in Lakeland from 6-8 p.m. tonight. Mr. Davis will be carried to Strickland Funeral Home in Crystal River, Fla. for a 5-7 p.m. visitation on Saturday.
