Candle causes fire, house damaged

VALDOSTA – A fire started by a candle badly damaged a Floyd Street address and left a resident without a home, according to the Valdosta Fire Department Monday.

City firefighters arrived at 709 Floyd St. Saturday evening to the sight of flames coming from the kitchen window of the residence, according to a VFD report.

Thirteen VFD personnel extinguished the fire in a short period of time.

The fire is classified as accidental, caused by an unattended candle, according to the VFD.

The resident was displaced but is staying with family, according to the VFD.

The structure suffered an estimated $11,500 in damages, according to reports.

The VFD reported responding to the residence within four minutes of receiving the call.
