Mary Bennett

NASHVILLE — Mary Bennett, 66, of Nashville passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at her residence.

She was born on May 11, 1938 in Cook County to Samuel L. and Fannie Cleon Touchton Martin. She was a homemaker and member of Nashville Church of Christ. She was the widow of Calvin C. Bennett who died in 1988.

She is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Bennett, Donna Smith, both of Nashville, Debra Bennett, Quitman; one son, Mike Bennett, Adel; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Nolan, Adel; six brothers, Lamar Martin, Adel, Laurrine Martin, Augusta, Maine, Jake Martin, Quitman, Billy Martin, Leonard Martin, both of Adel, Mickey Martin, Tifton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Gray.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Wallace Montgomery officiating. Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery. Newton “N.C.” Chauncey, Jr.

VALDOSTA — Newton “N.C.” Chauncey, Jr., 75, of Valdosta passed away early Thursday morning, June 17, 2004 in Lakehaven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Clinch County on Jan. 16, 1929 to the late Newton and Viola Cox Chauncey and had lived most of his life in Lowndes County. He was employed by Thompson Industrial Company as a truck driver for 37 years. He was of the Church of God faith. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Yeomans, Ora Pearl Bennett, Nezzie Howling, and a brother, Cecil C. Chauncey.

He is survived by one sister, Marie Pitchford of Valdosta; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with the Rev. Michael Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Wayfare Cemetery in Echols County. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening, June 18, 2004 at the funeral home. Barney L. Connell

SPARKS — Barney L. Connell, 96, of Sparks died on June 16, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 28, 1907, in Cook County to the late John Money and Emma Rowan Connell. He lived in Cook County most of his life. He was a retired sheet metal worker and member and deacon of Oakey Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Geneva Smith Connell of Sparks; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Terry Connell of Sparks; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Steve Metheney of Powell, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Leigh Ann Ellis and husband Justin of Sparks, Blake Connell, Sparks, Randy Metheney and wife Sonya, Powell, Tenn., Emilee Church and husband Scott, Trenton, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Elizabeth Church, Silas Isham; also survived by many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by six brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A.D. Connell, the Rev. Phillip Robinson, and the Rev. Charles Tyson officiating. Burial will be held in Longbridge Church Cemetery.

Michael Dion Cutchens

SAVANNAH — Michael Dion Cutchens, 49, of Savannah died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Savannah.

He was born on June 28, 1954, in Thomasville to Dion Melton and Betty Dollar Cutchens of Valdosta. He graduated from Valdosta High School where he played on the Valdosta High School football team when they won the 1971 National Championship. A graduate of Valdosta State, he belonged to Delta Chi Fraternity. He was a retired sergeant with the Southern Railroad Police and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his parents, Dion and Betty Cutchens of Valdosta; brother, Jeff Cutchens and wife, Melinda, Valdosta; sister, Lori Cutchens Reed, Thomasville; nieces and nephews, Adam Reed, Jordan Reed, Hannah Reed and Erinn Reed, Thomasville; aunts, Martha C. Miller and husband, Robert, Cairo, Mary Coykendall, Wichita, Kan.; uncle, Hyman Dollar, Pinellas Park, Fla.; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jeff Reed.

Graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, with Dr. Clyde Stokes officiating. There will be no special visitation.

Mattie Belle Walz

VALDOSTA — Mattie Belle Walz, 88, of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Presbyterian Home in Brooks County. Born in Cook County, Ga. on Aug. 17, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Abbie C. Ogletree and Manthy Elizabeth Kelly Ogletree. Mrs. Walz had worked as a nurses aid and was a member of the Clyattville Baptist Church.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Jones Jr., and Catherine King of Newington, Betty and Floyd Vaughn of Valdosta, Linda Sue and Bill Marable of Millerton, Okla., Mattie Ruth and Walter Range of Houston, Texas, Mary Elizabeth and Buck Irwin of Millerton, Okla., Marsha June Huffmaster of Quitman; a sister, Nadine McBurnett of Jacksonville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Walz, a brother, Carroll Ogletree and a son-in-law, Marlen Hufffmaster.

Robert Herman Williamson

DIXIE — Robert Herman Williamson, 61, of Dixie died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 as the result of an auto accident.

Born in Brooks County, he was the son of Hal Cordal and Lucy Lawhorn Williamson. He was owner/operator of Williamson Backhow Service, a member of the First Baptist Church of Quitman and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Williamson of Dixie; one daughter and son-in-law; Tracey and Jerry Wainright of McDonough, Ga.; one grandson, Case Wainright and a granddaughter, Kali Wainright; two sisters, Nina Sue Furry and Kathryn (Edward) Jones, both of Thomasville; two brothers, Ronald Williamson of Dixie, and James Williamson of Valdosta.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Loren Hildebrant officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
